The CJ CUP Byron Nelson is nearing its conclusion. However, the event, which is witnessing the return of Scottie Scheffler’s form, is just as iconic as the golfer himself. First started in 1944 as the Texas Victory Open, the event took a decade-long break after its third iteration. In 1968, organizers renamed it to honor Byron Nelson, who holds the record for the most consecutive PGA Tour wins. For an event as iconic as the CJ CUP Byron Nelson, the prize money (and perks) are equally noteworthy, and we have taken note of it all.
In 2024, the winner, Taylor Pendrith, earned 500 FedEx points and a total monetary prize of $1,710,000. Additionally, he also earned a spot at the second men’s major of the year, the 2024 PGA Championship, as well as the two signature events following the Valaha event, namely the Truist Championship and the Memorial. However, the TPC Craig Ranch event will see an increase in its purse prize, which adds even more excitement to the competition.

However, there’s more. Essentially, the Dallas event provides it winner 500 FedEx Cup points in addition to 67 OWGR points. Moreover, winning this PGA Tour event brings several benefits, including a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour and automatic entry into the Masters, PGA Championship, and The Players. Now that we have examined what the winner can earn, here’s how the CJ Cup Byron Nelson looks heading into the third round.
Scottie Scheffler is looking to win his first title of the season in his hometown
For Scottie Scheffler, who is still chasing his elusive form from the 2024 season, the TPC Craig Ranch event might just be the start of something special. Despite the weather delay lasting six hours and 15 minutes, the World No. 1 seems unstoppable. For instance, after he shot a score of 61 in the first round on Thursday at TPC Craig Ranch, Scheffler increased his lead to six shots following his second round on Friday in his hometown event.

Sam Stevens, who is playing some of his best golf this season, is closely following Scheffler. The American golfer, currently ranked 78th in the OWGR, has performed surprisingly well in the first two rounds. As he heads into the third round of the Texas event, Stevens has finished at 13-under par with scores of 65 and 65 in the first and second rounds, respectively. He is followed by another American golfer, Ricky Castillo, who, thanks to his rounds of 65 and 66, currently stands alone in 3rd position on the leaderboard.
The Colombian golfer Nico Echavarria, American Kurt Kitayama, and Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas are currently tied for 4th place. Heading into the third round, 7 of the 10 golfers are American. If they perform well, the trophy will likely remain in the country, unlike in the 2024 season. What do you think?
