The PGA Tour Champions is making its final stop in the regular season this week at the Prestonwood Country Club in North Carolina for the 25th edition of the 2025 SAS Championship. It is the last chance to secure a position among the top 72 players advancing to the Charles Schwab Cup playoffs, and the pressure is very intense. The field features 78 players this week, including the likes of Stewart Cink, Padraig Harrington, and Miguel Ángel Jiménez, to name a few. John Daly, who announced a new charity event yesterday, is notably skipping this event.

After Day 1, it’s a four-way tie at the top, with Robert Karlsson leading at 4-under, and Cink, Harrington joining him. Jiménez, who at 61 is having one of the best seasons of his career with four wins and 13 top-10s this season, sits tied for eighth and still very much in striking distance, just 2 shots behind. But Jimenez has not much to worry about other than taking home the trophy, as he leads the Charles Schwab Cup rankings by a comfortable margin. His ticket to the playoffs is secure, and now it’s all about momentum and maybe adding another trophy to his shelf.

The 2025 SAS Championship’s purse is $2.1 million, with a winner’s share of $315,000, which is the standard 15% payout according to the tour’s norms. Luckily, there’s no cut this week in the 54-hole event. So, it means every single player, even if they finish last, can take home a check.

The money earned this week counts toward the Charles Schwab Cup points list, where every dollar equals a point. That means there’s nearly 315,000 points on the line in the Schwab Cup standings. So even if players are not winning the trophy, moving up the money list could be their ticket to the playoffs.  After this week, the top 72 players move on, but the group keeps shrinking—first to 54, then down to just 36 for the Charles Schwab Cup Championship taking place next month in Phoenix.

But there’s more on the line. The results from this week will also help determine the final spot for each team for the World Champions Cup.

The SAS Championship also plays a key role in shaping the final rosters for one of the most anticipated team events in senior golf—the 2025 Skechers World Champions Cup. This Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup-inspired event returns for its second edition in December, and this week is where the final three player slots will be decided.

Each of the three teams, Team USA, Team Europe, and Team International, already has five players locked in. The sixth and final spot on each squad will be awarded to the top eligible player in the Charles Schwab Cup standings at the end of this week. So yes, Sunday’s results could be someone’s ticket to represent their region on a global stage, with captains Jim Furyk (USA), Mike Weir (International), and Darren Clarke (Europe) all watching closely.

Set to be played from December 4th – 7th at the Feather Sound Country Club in Clearwater, Florida, the event will once again feature legends battling it out for international pride and a whole lot of bragging rights. So, whether it’s fighting for a spot in the playoffs, taking home a big check, or trying to earn a spot to represent their country, players have no shortage of reasons to go all in at Prestonwood this week.
