The 2022 Masters is all set to begin this week at the iconic Augusta National. This is one of the most prominent and prestigious events in the golfing world. However, as we know, one of the famous golfers, Phil Mickelson, won’t be competing in this event. The 51-year-old golfer will skip the event for the first time since 1994. 

Mickelson is currently taking a break from golf, and he hasn’t informed any timeline for his break. He has won the green jacket thrice and hasn’t missed a single event since 1994.

However, things have changed this year as we won’t see the 51-year-old golfer teeing off at the Augusta National, and there have been a lot of changes in the golfing world since he last missed an event at Augusta National.

The legendary golfer who revolutionized golf, Tiger Woods, was yet to turn pro the last time Phil Mickelson missed the Masters. Woods turned pro in 1996, which is two years after Phil missed his Masters. 

Collin Morikawa was yet to take birth 

Collin Morikawa was born in 1997, while Phil last missed the Masters tournament in 1994. Moreover, the 25-year-old Collin now has won two major championships in his career. 

Jack Nicklaus was still competing

The 18-time major championship winner, Jack Nicklaus, was still playing professional golf. He mostly competed on the senior tour and major championships. 

Currently, he is 82-years-old as Mickelson will miss the Masters for the first time in 27 years. 

Arnold Palmer was a tour pro

Arnold Palmer, who unfortunately passed away in 2016, was still competing on the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions. He was even regularly participating at Bay Hill in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. 

The total purse of Masters was $2 million 

The last time Phil Mickelson missed the Masters was when the tournament had a total prize money purse of $2 million. However, currently, for the 2022 edition, we have around $11.5 million as a prize purse, with the winner’s share coming at around $2 million.
