Phil Mickelson, one of the best golfers on the LIV golf, is known for his powerful long shots. However, the golfer is not very fond of old traditions and prefers to follow his own. His denying rules were brought to light by Alan Shipnuck, an American sports writer specializing in golf.

But not all golfers are the same. After Justin Thomas won at Southern Hills earlier this year, Bones took the flag from the 18th hole to display at his home. He was just as delighted as Thomas and took the flag to commemorate his sixth major win as a caddie. But he never got to keep the flag with Mickelson? Is this true?

Did Phil Mickelson not care about his caddie?

According to Shipnuck, the actions of Mickelson were disrespectful towards his caddie. By tradition, the caddie gets to keep the flag, but the former PGA golfer always took the flag home. “For Phil not to follow the tradition was hugely disrespectful,” a source told Shipnuck. Whenever a golfer wins a master, they get the green jacket, a giant check with a shining trophy.

Then why Mickelson had to take the flag too? He could have just given it to his caddie and respected the tradition. The former writer at Sports Illustrated also quoted one of the closest sources of Bones. The actions of Mickelson were “a big f*** you to the caddie.”

In Shipnuck’s book, ‘Phil: The Rip-Roaring (and unauthorized),’ he mentioned that Bones never enjoyed the right to take the flags home. The Bones and Mickelson duo won five significant titles together, but not once Bones got a hold of the flags. It was because of the tradition that the pro golfer followed.

He used to give them to his grandfather, who passed away before his win at The Masters in 2004. But Shipnuck revealed in his book that the caddie respected the gesture of the golfer of giving flags to his grandfather. However, “19 more Tour victories would follow, including four majors, and he never got to keep a single flag,” wrote Shipnuck.

Did Bones ever receive his share of flags?

Bones received the flags, but quite late, and they needed to be displayable, but they were not. The LIV defector and Bones parted ways in 2017. Mickelson sent him all the flags of his major wins with Bones as a friendly gesture because he was a great caddie. However, all the flags were plastered with autographs. Therefore, Bones never displayed them in his house.

After Thomas won Wanamaker Trophy in Tulsa, Bones had a perfect spot in his mind to display the flag. But of course, after considering his wife’s thoughts, too. However, the PGA golfer was happy with the win and complimented the guidance. He acknowledged the right support of his caddie that he received after his third round. According to the golfer, he and Bones have a flourishing career ahead of them, and their partnership was a successful association.
