John Daly is a flamboyant personality. Other than being known for his unexpected 1991 PGA Championship victory, he is also famous for his lifestyle. He goes by the moniker “Long John” in the golfing community, all thanks to his driving distance off the tee. His beard is considered to be somewhat legendary. He recently disclosed a very personal reason that motivated him to grow his beard.

Why did John Daly grow his beard?

Everyone in the golfing community is aware that Daly, 52, was diagnosed with bladder cancer back in 2020. He is still strongly battling the deadly disease. However, his health journey has been uphill ever since.

In a recent interview, Long John revealed why he chose to grow out a beard, and the reason is definitely not what you guys think. He answered the question, “The reason I did this when I got cancer I wanted to prove to people, hey, we can try and still grow something.” Daly also said that nobody ever thinks growing up that they are going to get this vicious disease.

He also informed the fans of being “benign right now” and that he was going back for his treatment in May. Daly is rebellious and does not follow what his doctors ask him to do because he is still smoking. 

The 52-year-old also informed that one of his best friends and the legendary singer, Toby Keith, was also battling stomach cancer. His treatment is also going on for now. Daly prays for him and everyone with cancer because “It’s brutal.”

How did fans react to Daly’s emotional remarks?

Fans are not used to seeing Daly being so vulnerable and emotional. His remarks got some loving reactions from the fans.

A fan commented why he loves Daly, “One of my all-time favorites because he is real like all the rest of us!”; “The most real dude in the history of the PGA. Not a damn thing fake about big John!” said another fan.
