It would be a grave error to exclude Gary Player from the list of legends in golf. Despite playing in the same era as Jack Nicklaus, Player amassed a massive win record. He had recently been in the news for being the oldest player at the PNC Championship at 87 years old. But the fun family celebrating event was followed by an intense family feud where Player sued his son.

The South African golfer turned pro in 1953 and spent the majority of his career on the Sunshine Tour, a.k.a. the African Tour. Besides winning over 60 events in South Africa, Player also won nine majors, including a career grand slam.

A civil war begins within the Player family

In 2009, Player retired from golf with a truckload of awards and memorabilia. Little did he know that 13 years later, that would cause a feud within his family. As per the Palm Beach Post, earlier in May this year, Player filed a complaint against his son, Marc Player. Six months later, a lawsuit against Marc’s son, Damien Player followed.

The lawsuit against Damien came after he was allegedly involved in the sale of Player’s Rolex watches to a person in Florida “for significant sums of money.” Besides that, over $591,442 worth of memorabilia was sold against Gary’s wishes. The lawsuit also includes Damien’s father and Gary’s son, Marc. It states that Marc failed to transfer social media accounts and Gary’s web domain name to the golfer.

Gary’s attorney, Stuart Singer, reiterated constantly that all the claims were filed “reluctantly” by the golf legend. He claimed that Gary had exhausted every other option, and had no choice left.

What sparked the conflict between Gary Player and his son?

The two worked together for nearly two decades, with Marc serving as Gary’s manager. Over time, the golfer had assigned to him, rights to logos, images, likenesses, and trademarks. But two years ago, in 2019, Singer explained that Gary revoked those rights after a claim that Marc owed him $5 million.

In August, a tweet went up on Gary’s account claiming Marc had auctioned off some of his memorabilia without Gary’s permission. The post stated, “These items belong to me, and I have taken action to recover them.”
