Angel Yin has faced plenty of challenges on the course, but carrying her own bag was never supposed to be one of them. At the HSBC Women’s World Championship, Yin’s regular caddie, Michelle Simpson, fell ill mid-round, leaving her scrambling for a replacement.

Her first option? A friend who had just flown in from Hawaii. But there was one small problem—Yin’s bag was no joke. “My friend, who is my manager, tried and she almost fell over,” Yin laughed. “She weighs as much as the golf bag, so no way was that going to happen.” Realizing she needed a pro, Yin reached out to Sakchai “Tom” Sirimaya, the same caddie who had helped her win in Thailand just a week before. Tom, a former pro golfer himself, wasted no time. “He arrived at midnight and he has more energy than me,” Yin said. “It’s honestly really, really cool.“

With a new caddie by her side, Yin made an incredible bounce-back in Round 2, firing a bogey-free 68. But while she was regaining her momentum, her body had other plans. The same illness that sidelined her caddie eventually caught up to her, forcing her to withdraw after two rounds.
