For one, the 73-year golfer wants to know the implications of the merger on the PGA Tour. He rightfully asks what the stakeholders and players get and what they are expected to sacrifice or compromise in light of the deal. Watson points out that there are five players who are part of the policy board referring to Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay, Webb Simpson, Charley Hoffman, and Peter Malnati. Evidently, these players weren’t consulted or included in the decision-making process.

Tom further raises the question of why the deal was nudged forward by Jimmy Dunne in such secrecy till before the public announcement on 6th June 2023. “Why was this deal done in such secrecy?” he nearly interrogated.

The PGA Tour has a prestigious image in the golfing community. Watson, along with several other golfers, feels that such an impactful decision that will have consequences in the golf world at large, should have taken more time and consideration.

Tom also dropped a truth bomb stating that “While it is accepted that players on all levels would value the opportunity to make more money, it has also been illustrated that not all of our players are in search of money at all costs.” He refers to the divided consensus that exists between the LIV golfers and those who remained loyal to the PGA Tour. He also calls out the hypocritical stand that Monahan and the presiding leadership of the Tour, including Jack Niklaus and Gary Player took for all these years against LIV golf.

The veteran golfer with 50 years of experience in the association, questions what fate awaits those who left the PGA Tour for LIV Golf and now want to rejoin their former membership. Despite the merger, many players were rumored to be left out in the cold for abandoning the PGA Tour. This question may be grounded in Monahan’s statement shared in the NYTimes claiming that in 2023, all the tournaments will be held separately. The ‘Framework agreement’ will require voting on the matter to make a definitive decision which will only come into play in 2024. However, the statement does not clarify any of the doubts that the ‘Huckleberry Dillinger’ has raised.

The golfing community shows support for Watson’s stance

Earlier, this month when Niklaus and Player took their stand in support of the merger, the fans and other players were literally dumbfounded. It wasn’t days ago that Jack Niklaus took a firm stand against the defectors of the PGA Tour and claimed that they are not even thought about anymore. However, something or someone changed his mind effectively and the veteran golfers jumped on the merger wagon. Fans viewed this sudden change of mind as a hypocritical move and criticized them immensely.

Now that their prolonged rival Tom Watson, has stated the actual issues concerning the merger, the Golden Bear and the Black Knight have very little ground to stand on to support their claims. Golfing fans sent uproarious reactions concerning Tom Watson’s letter to Jay Monahan.

Monahan recognized the critical position he faced and send out this tweet the day after the merger was declared.

While some people are questioning if his priorities are more right-winged monopolization of the golfing world, others seem to have a better perspective of his questions. In reality, the merger could hamper the position of chief stakeholders in the initial stages. However, it also has a positive side. The players who defected from the PGA Tour and have been hankering to return despite the gold and shine in LIV Golf, now have an opportunity to do so. That is, of course, once Watson’s poised questionnaire is answered without further ambiguity.
