At just 6,852 yards, the TPC River Highlands is one of the shortest stops that the PGA Tour visits every year. Many golfers, who ascend upon the venue after a hectic few days at the US Open, generally don’t mind the undaunting nature of it. But, with the Travelers Championship becoming a designated event on the Tour, the stakes are now significantly higher.

Just this year, the tournament played host to many of the biggest names in golf, with eight of the top 10 players on the Official World Golf Rankings making an appearance. Now, a flurry of low scores later, many wonder if the venue may be a bit too easy for the competing players. 4-time major winner and World No. 3 Rory McIlroy weighed in on the situation after his final round.

Rory McIlroy voices his grievances against the Travelers Championship venue

The 2023 edition of the Travelers Championship marked Rory McIlroy’s 5th appearance at the coveted event. It was also his best to date. In fact, just days ago, the venue in Cromwell, Connecticut, saw McIlroy make the first-ever hole-in-one of his PGAT career. On Sunday, he ended his run in the competition with an impressive T7 finish.

After the final round, the golfer was asked if the course was a bit too plain-sailing for players. Despite his stellar performance, the 34-year-old couldn’t help but agree. “I don’t particularly like when a tournament is like this. Unfortunately, technology has passed this course by, right?” opined McIlroy. “It sort of has made it obsolete, especially as soft as it has been with a little bit of rain that we had.

Meanwhile, the par-70 layout at TPC River Highlands saw players record low scores this year. Both Rickie Fowler and Denny McCarthy shot 60. Patrick Cantlay carded a 61. There were a great number of 62s, 63s, and 64s as well. For all four rounds, the scoring average was 68.40, the lowest on the PGAT this season.

How did McIlroy fare in Connecticut?

McIlroy kicked things off in style by making five birdies in his first seven holes. But a bogey on the ninth ended up ruining his momentum. He eventually settled for a 64 to finish at 18-under overall, five shots behind winner Keegan Bradley.

Both McIlroy and Denny McCarthy, who tied for 7th place, took home $650,000 each. With the British Open set to be held at the Royal Liverpool in less than a month, the former World No. 1 will, no doubt, be satisfied with his return to form.
