The year 2023 for LIV Golf was filled with drama. When one means to say ‘drama’, we cannot possibly ignore the whole fiasco that Brooks Koepka had with his 24-year-old teammate back then. However, in a fitting climax to the rift, the young golfer was traded to RangeGoats GC for none other than Talor Gooch, the season-ending Individual Champion for the Saudi-backed league.

Now, as the young pro gears up to play the upcoming season of the alternate tour following a dramatic year, it seems he has found a pillar of support in the RangeGoats GC skipper. Moreover, the latter even went ahead to shower him with praise, all the while dubbing the professional as the perfect “fit” for the squad!

In an episode of The NCG Golf Podcast, Bubba Watson explained the whole thought process behind trading Matthew Wolff for Talor Gooch, along with Harold Varner III for Peter Uihlein. He mentioned how putting Uihlein on the same team as his 24-year-old golfing friend “makes the RangeGoats that much better” in terms of “personalities,” “what fits” for the team, “where… and who they want to be” in 2024.

Adding on, the RangeGoats GC captain was full of praise for Wolff as he expressed his approval of how the athlete is “really a long-term vision” for the team. Continuing with his compliments, the 45-year-old also made sure to highlight his skills and iterated, “I think he’s very talented. He’s proven that He’s talented.” Moreover, he also pointed out how “his creativity, his swing,” combined with his upbringing that was closely related to the sport, made him the person who “fit the goats the most.”

Many in the community were puzzled by the trade-off between the Individual Champion and the player who finished No. 27 on the season-ending leaderboard. Nevertheless, if everything has to go as per Watson’s plan, then it’s just as he said in the podcast, “all the pieces have to come together.”

Although the player swap did come off as a surprise to the community, so did the whole drama that took place between Smash GC’s captain and Wolff. What led to the heated exchange between the five-time major winner and the 24-year-old golfer?

During the 2023 LIV Golf event in Washington, the 2019 3M Open champ had gone ahead to withdraw from the same after the second round. However, that did not sit well with the skipper, Koepka, as he pointed out the unsportsmanlike conduct of the 24-year-old while also expressing his displeasure with him. Moreover, he even went ahead to convey how he has now given up on Wolff after the tournament.

Anyway, it seems both Koepka and Wolff are content with where they are right now. Besides, if everything goes according to plan, the happiest of them all would be Watson, who made the risky yet logical choice of trading Gooch for the youngster.
