He was on the 13th hole at the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills when the golfer ran towards his bogey putt and decided to hit the ball again. And that too, without letting it stop. As a result, Mickelson was given a two-stroke penalty.

After the incident, Mickelson didn’t want to speak about the matter to the media. But his wife came to his rescue to explain his situation to the reporters. Amy Mickelson said“He’s a good man who had a bad moment.”. Fans and other players on the field thought that the golfer was guilty of cheating. Some said that Mickelson should have been disqualified rather than given a penalty. However, the rules are the same for everyone, and so was the case with Phil Mickelson.

Phil Mickelson spoke about the matter after the third round and said that he was aware of the rules. “I took the two-shot penalty and moved on,” Mickelson said. “I’ve had multiple times where I’ve wanted to do that.
