Shane Lowry speaks his mind and this is what he wants

Rory McIlroy, who is the current World No.2, has no major win under his name for the past nine years. But recently he has been doing well; he won the Genesis Scottish Open last week. Not just McIlroy’s fans, Shane Lowry, who won the championship in 2019, wants his fellow Irishman to win the trophy. There is a caveat, though. Only if he fails to win first. “…I want to play well. I’ve a lot to play for. One other fella (Rory) playing pretty well. Be great if we can give ourselves Hope there is an Irishman on top of the leaderboard (on Sunday)….I hope it’s me!

Lowry should be praised for his feelings towards Rory McIlroy. He could have excluded him from his thoughts but he did not and his words suggest strongly that he wants ‘Rors’ to break the drought of several years now at a major championship.

Lowry and McIlroy at recent Open Championships

In the year 2018, McIlroy finished T2 but Lowry couldn’t even make the cut. But in the following year, the tables turned big time at the Dunluce Course and Lowry won the championship. This time McIlroy couldn’t make the cut. After the cancellation of event in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, in 2021, Lowry again ended better at T12, while McIlroy ended T46. Last year, McIlroy finished in third position while Lowry finished T21.

The last major McIlroy won was in 2014 at the Open Championship. This appears to be McIlroy’s greatest opportunity to end the drought in many years.
