‘All I Wanted Was His Love’: John Daly Once Got Emotional While Talking About His Father

The American professional golfer, John Daly, considers his son, John Patrick Daly, one of his best friends. Their chemistry was evident at the PNC Championship events they have attended together. Recently, he even let his son caddie for him at the 150th Open Championship. While Daly’s bond with his son is strong, he didn’t have the same experience with his father.  

“Don’t get me wrong, my dad’s not the evil person in the world,” he said. The two-time major champion opened up about his relationship with his father when Graham Bensinger interviewed him in 2016.

According to Daly, his father provided for him and his siblings. He used to play golf, football, and baseball growing up, and his father, Jim Daly, had helped him achieve his dream of becoming an athlete. “I love him for that,” the professional golfer added. However, he said, “But I didn’t need that from him. All I wanted was his love.”

John Daly wishes he had a great relationship with his father as he has with his son

“(I) like to be able to have a conversation that my son can have with me,” Daly revealed in the interview. However, he never had such a relationship with his father.

Daly won his first major at the PGA Championship in 1991. Notably, he shocked everyone in the golf world with his victory as he was only a ninth alternate of the Crooked Stick field then. Everyone was excited about his victory. However, according to the golfer, he never talked to his father about his surprising win. “We just never have had that bond,” he stated.

At the time of the interview, Little John was studying in sixth grade, and according to Daly, they then shared a great bond. And he wished their relationship to stay the same even after he grew up.

Is Daly Jr. a golfer like his father?

John Patrick Daly has chosen to follow in his father’s footsteps and wants to become a professional golfer like his father someday. He has already established his name in the golf world by winning the 2021 PNC Championship with his father. 

Daly Jr. has also won 10 championship titles as an amateur since the 2016-2017 season. Moreover, in his last 28 starts, he finished in the top 10 fourteen times.

John Daly never had a good relationship with his father. Even though his father provided for the family, the two-time major champion never got the love he wanted from him. Unlike his father, the golfer expresses his love for his son and wants to keep a friendly relationship with him even when they grow old.
