Mel Reid was dealing with a sore wrist and mental fatigue ahead of the 2023 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. Then, the golfer has been vocal about personal battles with anxiety and depression, crediting former mental coach Duncan McCarthy for helping turn things around (entered Baltusrol fresh off four consecutive top-30 finishes). While she often uses her platform to spotlight mental health, this time, the story took a hilarious turn.
Reid and McCarthy’s strong partnership comes with its fair share of embarrassing (albeit funny) moments, and Amanda Balionis has a few laughs to share. Recently, sitting down for a discussion on her co-hosted podcast show with Kira Dixon, Mel Reid shared the one moment she cannot forget. According to the story, Duncan McCarthy asked her to write her testimony, to which Reid agreed immediately, “Yes, of course, I will. No problem.”
“So, I write it all out. Said very lovely things which are all true about him, Duncan. And, for some reason, I forgot, the word testimony. Testimony,” explained Reid. You’d be excused to think that’s where the problem began, but no! The problem began when Reid tried to look for the word Testimony and ended with “eulogy.” Yes, you read that right.

“So, I googled, ‘When you say something nice about someone. Okay?’ And I saw this word, I thought, yes, that’s the word! I knew it was a word. Anyway, his wife deals with his admin. So, I sent her an email saying, ‘Duncan’s eulogy.’ I didn’t think anything of it. Really proud of myself. And then, he texts me. He’s like, ‘Danielle’s really confused about your email you sent, and I’m like, ‘why?'”

Still unable to understand what she did wrong, McCarthy’s wife suggested that Reid look for the meaning of the word. Instead of turning to Google this time, however, Reid turned to her wife, Carly Reid, and asked her about the meaning. After correcting the mistake, Carly demanded that Reid never send anything without her second opinion. Listening to the story, Amanda Balionis reacted as we all did: by laughing! And Amanda Balionis wrote in the comment section under the post was “Mel 😂😂😂😂,” but we all felt the same way. This, however, isn’t the first time Mel Reid’s stories have elicited laughter from popular broadcasters.
The one time Mel Reid’s “filthy story” made Brandel Chamblee laugh
Mel Reid and Charley Hull share an amazing friendship – loads and loads of funny stories, at least from Mel Reid’s side. One of the recent ones was from the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open, but the public never got to know the actual story. So, here’s the setting: Initially feeling “timid” alongside seasoned broadcasters Anna Jackson and Brandel Chamblee on Golf Channel’s “Live From,” Reid shared several jokes during the games. However, she hadn’t made Brandel Chamblee laugh, which didn’t sit well with her.

Once the show reached a commercial break, the “goofball” launched into a story about an “absolutely filthy” moment involving Charley Hull, and that was when Brandel Chamblee broke all walls of professionalism and laughed. “I think that laugh is one of my greatest life achievements. I just gained a whole new confidence,” Reid said after the show. And honestly, we understand the confidence—making a man of Chamblee’s prestige laugh? That counts as a win! However, Reid wasn’t done sharing funny stories about Charley Hull.
And this one story happened during the 2017 Solheim Cup. Mel Reid and Charley Hull faced off against the formidable duo of Lexi Thompson and Cristie Kerr as they approached the 16th hole. Hull stepped up to a crucial twelve-footer that could level the score, but instead of focusing on the putt, she turned to her caddie, Adam Woodward, and asked, “Ads, you booked me that massage, didn’t you?” Woodward, clearly taken aback, responded with a confused, “What?” But Hull, unfazed, pressed on, “You booked me that massage, yeah?” After confirming, she casually replied, “Oh, yeah, cheers, geez,” and then sank the putt without even celebrating!
Looking at these stories, it makes sense why Mel Reid is famously called a “goofball” in the world of golf!
