For an athlete, maintaining consistency is an important aspect or else they could end up with scrutiny from experts as well as fans. And LPGA player Danielle Kang, who is facing a similar struggle, is out there to remind everyone that she is a force to be reckoned with.

This week the LPGA is back with the Portland Classic tournament in Oregon and Danielle Kang has had a good start. Expectations are high from Kang who is in the hunt for her first win for this year. After a good first round, she is sitting on T11 with Charley Hull.

At the event’s post-round press conference, when asked what she was working on in order to turn the clock back, she said, “You know, it’s just golf, right? It’s not just one or two swing thoughts. It’s just mostly like me working on getting back to kind of playing the way I want to play. I think that just takes time for me.”

While she is trying to get back her old form, at the same time, she is also trying to have fun. She continued, “I think we’re headed towards the end of it and I’m kind of excited for that. Just kind of trying to figure out how to enjoy it out there more.”

After turning pro, Kang earned her first LPGA win in 2017 at the Women’s PGA Championship. After that, she has won five more tournaments. Her last victory came in January 2022 after she won the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions. Since then the 30-year-old is in search of another win. But it is not easy, given her health struggles and her tough finishes in various events this year.

A look at Danielle Kang’s performance in 2023

2023 has been a relatively tough year for Kang who last year was diagnosed with a tumor on her spine. Though she took some time off, her performance this season isn’t what it used to be. She missed the cut at two major tournaments — the Amundi Evian Championship, and US Women’s Open, and withdrew from the Drive on Championship. In other events like the AIG Women’s Open and the recent CP Women’s Open, she finished outside the top 50.

Kang herself is aware of this deteriorated form and is trying her best to overcome it with a lot of focus and practice. Hopefully, the Portland Classic will change the narrative for her.
