Viewership ups and downs, odd timings of broadcast, and criticism for tech inclusion in golf are some of the factors that brought in worry for TGL. But despite the speculations, the league averaged 502,400 viewers for its debut season. Fans now await a second season with more teams, a new venue, and improved experience expectations. But with the rising expectations, the founder, Tiger Woods, has kept his silence due to his own personal struggles — the sudden demise of his mother and then the Achilles tendon injury have kept him away from the course.
But with his silence, the worry for the league has caught attention. But not anymore, as his partner in TGL has stepped ahead and shed light on the new initiatives that might revolutionize the future of golf, along with the reason why they started the league. Rory McIlroy recently featured in an interview on the CNBC channel. He shared how, with the insight from the league, he has worked on a new initiative that would shape the future of the sport. He and his longtime agent and business partner, Sean O’Flaherty, have recently launched a sports investment fund in partnership with private equity firm TPG.
McIlroy shared, “It mightn’t be that sexy trophy asset of an NFL team or an NBA team. But you know, the businesses that are, you know, sports adjacent that are helping a lot of these leagues and these and these teams, I guess, go grow and bring them into the 21st century.” Through his firm Symphony Ventures, a new initiative, TPG Sports, is launched. It is a new investment platform that focuses on reshaping the sports industry. Earlier, McIlroy and partner Sean O’Flaherty had partnered with TPG on an investment (Troon Golf). Also, the pair ventured into GolfPass with NBC Sports and the TMRW Golf League (TGL).

Even talking about TGL and how the thought of changing the sports future, the recent career grand slam winner, Rory McIlroy, expressed the thought process. He said, “The demographic that watches TGL is way different than the demographic that watches regular PGA Tour golf. I mean, the, you know, the audience is skewing way younger, which is a great thing for the game because, you know, the criticism of golf is. It’s an old, it’s an old person’s sport. So to try, to sort of bring the age down of the viewership, I think is really, really important.”
Golf, which is considered a low-impact sport, has in the past improved with the toughness of the course and competitiveness in the sport. Even with the new initiative of TGL, the viewership, which was considered old, has dropped 12 years and has come down to 52 (Median). As per the data of TWGR sports, the league is now on second to have the second youngest audience among major men’s sports.

Interestingly, even the Los Angeles GC owner, Alexis Ohanian, and Serena Williams have suggested that LPGA stars join the league and make it more gender neutral. Now, with a younger audience already, gender inclusivity will only boost that.
