Following his controversy involving the Saudi-backed golf league, Phil Mickelson has been away from the golf world. The veteran icon missed The Masters in years and has also been away from social media following his apology. However, with the US Open and PGA Championship approaching, it seems like Mickelson is ready to make his comeback.
Mickelson’s last PGA Tour event was the Farmers Insurance Open, where he ended up missing the cut. With the Masters already wrapped up, Mickelson seems to be returning for the remaining majors.

Even though the PGA Tour has countless other events to watch out for, a major might be an appropriate comeback for the 51-year-old.

“Our client Phil Mickelson is officially registered to play in the PGA Championship as well as the U.S. Open,” read Mickelson’s statement. Additionally, they also asked for a release in June for the Invitational league in Saudi.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t guarantee any concrete decision. “Any actions taken are in no way a reflection of a final decision made, but rather to keep all options open.”
Why is the PGA Championship important for Mickelson’s career?
Although Mickelson missed out at the Masters for the first time since 1994, his PGA Championship entry will give him a chance to defend his 2021 title. The PGA Tour star is the oldest golfer to win a major and has been determined to win another one while active.
Furthermore, this will be a chance for Mickelson to meet Tiger Woods on the course again. The two icons, though known for their cordial relationship now, started out as rivals early on. With injuries and other issues pertaining, the two have not played an event together in months.
However, if Mickelson plays the PGA Tour soon, it will be a brilliant matchup for fans to enjoy.
This will be an opportunity for Mickelson to try and win the US Open to complete his career grand slam.

Mickelson has also been playing (and winning) on the PGA TOUR Champions. He last played and won the Charles Schwab Cup Championship last year, and is yet to return to the senior tour. Of course, his time there has proven successful, especially as Mickelson has won four out of six titles he played last year.
