The world of golf will reach new levels of excitement as the FedEx Cup playoffs are all set to get underway at the TPC Southwind Golf Club in Memphis, Tennessee. The top 70 in the rankings will play in the no-cut event for a  qualification at the BMW Championship. Many players are headlining the tournament among which Rory McIlroy is a favorite to win.

The tournament offers a hefty prize purse of $20 million with a winner’s cut of $3.6 million. The winner will also receive 2000 FedEx Cup points. But McIlroy has found himself in a situation where there is more at stake for the golfer if he is not able to pull off his best finish. This has left his fans both thrilled and worried over the player as they expect great things from him this time around.

Rory McIlroy’s chance to reach the top

McIlroy will be looking to finish at the top this week as the golfer aims to replicate his FedEx Cup win from 2022. He had finished ahead of Scottie Scheffler scoring a total of 21-under-par 263 to take home the cup and a prize money of $18 million. Moreover, he will hope to improve his place on the Official World Golf Rankings as well, as the golfer looks to compete in the playoffs this time.

Earlier this year, he was unable to capture the No. 1 position on the OWGR which made him stay behind Scheffler, as the 27-year-old American golfer occupied the top position. McIlroy could only finish at the 6th position in the 2023 Open Championship as he settled for a score of 6-under-par 278.

Currently, at No.2 in the world rankings, he will look to claim the top spot this week at the 2023 FedEx St. Jude Championship. A post was uploaded not too long ago which explained his chances at the top spot. The Irish golfer will return to No. 1 if he wins the championship and at the same time, Scheffler finishes tied at the 5th position or below.

The Irish golfer had become the top earner of the FedEx Cup of all time and he will be looking forward to increasing his earnings this year. Nevertheless, he will hope to increase his numbers as the golfer aims to move ahead of the No.2 spot in the world ranking.

McIlroy’s rise to the second spot

The 34-year-old golfer produced a stunning performance to lift the cup at the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open. Taking home a prize of $1.5 million, he was able to beat his competitors as he birdied the last two holes to win the tournament. With the title and the prize money, the much-needed win propelled him to the No. 2 position on the OWGR

McIlroy has spent a total of 122 weeks on the top spot and after this week, he will look forward to increasing that number again.
