Would you concede a one-and-a-half-foot slider in a match play? You might not. Well, that was the take of Francis Ellis against Paige Spiranac at the Internet Invitational. This is the basis we see Spiranac once again at the helm of another controversy, and the fans did not spare her as she made a rather stingy dig at Ellis.

“It’s a match play, right?” confirms Paige Spiranac as Ellis marked the putt. As she watched around, she murmured, “That’s crazy.” Ellis, trying to defend himself, goes, “What do you mean? It’s a million dollars!” Spiranac, hearing that, said with a serious face, “That just shows you never played competitive golf.”
The clip in question comes from the final episodes, where Spiranac and Ellis were among the last six standing for the $1.7 million grand prize at the Internet Invitational. It goes without saying that the tensions were high. As the players returned to their golf carts, Spiranac said to her team, with a cunning smile, “Well, they didn’t like that.” The quarrel didn’t end here.

So that patronizing was just Spiranac trying to get into the heads of her rivals? Well, that makes sense, as Ellis himself says, there is a million dollars in the prize. Also, this is not your typical golf event. The Internet Invitational mixes traditional golf with reality-TV drama. That’s why the internet’s biggest golf personalities are on the course, playing through alternate-shot rounds, Ryder Cup-style scrambles, eliminations, re-drafts, and whatnots.
So, it makes sense if the players are trying to reach for each other’s throats. Because how else are you going to tune in the viewers? To keep the drama on those lines, Ellis is later heard saying, “I’m just saying. I will bury her. You want to go there? You want to make it dark?” He then laughs and quips, “I’m a professional comedian. I will ruin lives.”

As the two meet again, he confronts Spiranac for her comments. Clever as she is, she feigns a fake surprise: “Did I actually say that?” Not buying into her pretence, it was Ellis who now took a jibe at her, ” I haven’t played competitive golf. This is a side gig for me. Yet somehow, I’m right here with you.”
With drone shots, moving cameras, and mics attached almost everywhere, these, less than a minute long clips, were enough to intrigue fans’ attention. Posting these, Barstool Sports, which is conducting the event, captioned: “@francisccellis and @_paige.renee becoming a rivalry at the @internetinvite wasn’t something we saw coming.”

Are we sure of that? Because this is the same event that saw Luke Kwon turn from a loved internet personality into a villain. As he slept through his tee time, costing his team a point, the internet did not spare him for his nonchalant attitude, prompting him to come on YouTube and formally apologize.
Similarly, the internet did not spare Spiranac either (a drill we all should be used to by now), as she tried to fit herself towards the last legs of the event.

Paige Spiranac again under the internet’s wrath
“She’s so unlikeable.” Or “Each episode she becomes less likable.” These are not our words. It is certainly not new for Paige Spiranac to be on the receiving end of online hate. Her bold personality has often seen her being doxxed, harassed, and trolled on her social media. She doesn’t need to do much to drive that force. That’s why, as the clips posted by Barstool Sports reach towards the 10k mark likes, the internet world, yet again, showed Spiranac its unmerciful nature.
As the comments rolled in, a few of them caught eyes. A user goes in support of Francis Ellis, “Love it, Francis. She’s just jealous because she can’t rock the hat.”
This was in reference to a different cold moment the two shared on the course. Throughout the event, Ellis is seen wearing a white hat. As Ellis stands and jokes about something among the group, Spiranac bluntly goes, “Not in that hat.” Ellis is left speechless and could only muster a “Oh” sly smile.

“Paige sucks, no wonder why shes getting all the internet hate,” said another commentator.
Spiranac is certainly great for the content, as she has been repeatedly magnetizing scrutiny. Just a few days back, she landed in hot water for passing off another offhand comment. This time, it was directed at Nadeshot and his playing ability. The internet did not like it, and she was made to apologize.
But that was not satisfactory for many. A few days later, Spiranac came up on the Internet and posted a video, in tears. “I don’t normally do this, but this hate for some reason has just been really hitting home for me…I’m just not effortlessly liked,” she says, pointing at comments that abused her and asked her to k*ll herself.
While all that hate is unacceptable, especially for an event that is crafted for exaggerated rivalries, Spiranac’s new jabs at Ellis made several users hit her where it might hurt the most.
One of them goes, “Maybe she’ll post another IG story of her crying over this, too.” On the same line, another person types, “She’s such a crybaby, I’m actually not a fan of her anymore.”
It looks like Spiranac and co. might have to take down a notch on the drama if they want to survive peacefully till the end. For what it’s worth, this Internet Invitational will be remembered for time to come.
