Annika Sorenstam Once Again Claims Top Spot and Reigns Supreme at the International Golf Federation

Annika Sorenstam has taken up a variety of prominent management positions within golf since her retirement. The 52-year-old is a part of the International Golf Federation (IGF), where she was recently elected as the President for the second consecutive year.

The 10-time major championship winner was first elected as the President in 2020, succeeding the outgoing Peter Dawson. Owing to her multiple accolades in her distinguished career, Sorenstam was considered a global representative of the game.

Her latest re-election means Sorenstam won’t be leaving her chair for the next two years. She’ll now be serving as IGF President till the end of 2024.

Alongside her, DP World Tour CEO, Keith Pelley, was also elected as the Chairman of IGF. He secured a five-year term at the organization, bringing in significant experience at the higher offices of golf.

Antony Scanlon, IGF Executive Director, gave the following statement after the pair’s announcements. “We are grateful for the leadership of Keith Pelley and Annika Sörenstam as we continue to encourage the international development of the sport of golf. As two prominent members in the international golf landscape, Keith and Annika will bring extensive experience and knowledge to our overall strategy and we are thrilled to have them in these key roles.”

Scanlon was also full of praise for PGA Tour commissioner, Jay Monahan. Monahan is formally a part of IGF and has the seat of Chairman to his name. “I also want to thank PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan for his tenure as the IGF Chairman and we’re delighted to have him continue on the Board moving forward,” the statement read.

Who held the IGF President position before Sorenstam?

A surreal winner in her days at the LPGA Tour, Sorenstam first became President when she succeeded Peter Dawson, who has held the post for ten long years. In a decade of administration, Dawson’s team proved the catalyst for bringing golf to an Olympic audience, which was met with applause among the sports community.

Sorenstam played a crucial part in the successful Olympic bid. She served as a Global Ambassador for the game in its claim to participate in the Summer Olympic games. Golf returned to the quadrennial event in Rio 2016, which was certainly a catalyst for the growth and popularity of the game.
