Rory McIlroy and Carolinе Wozniacki were one of the most famous couples in the world of sports. The Irish golfer and the Danish tennis star started dating in 2011. In 2013, the Irishman reportedly proposed to her on a boat in Sydney Harbor on New Year’s Eve with a £100,000 ring. However, their romance came to an abrupt end in 2014, when McIlroy called off their wedding over the three-minute phone call, just days after sending out the invitations.

Following the ugly split, the couple does not appear to be talking to each other, even almost after eight years. This was made evident when they ran into each other awkwardly at the 2023 Masters. McIlroy and Wozniacki’s relationship was not meant to last, but they have both found happiness and success in their ways. Although the former couple has now moved on, and are happy in their respective relationships.

What went down between the couple that hinted that their split was not amicable?

The reason behind their split was not fully explained, but McIlroy later admitted to the Irish Sunday Independent, “I thought at the time that being with someone who was in a similar position to you was the obvious answer.”

McIlroy’s cryptic words hinted that being in the same line of profession, as athletes, probably was the reason that caused the split between the two. “But it isn’t, because you can never get away from it. You can never detach yourself and try to come back to the real world,” said the Irish golfer. Following the breakup, Wozniacki also was shocked and heartbroken.

She spoke to The Guardian, and said, “I was shocked. I thought at least it would be face-to-face or something but there was nothing. It was a phone call and I didn’t hear from him again.” Talking about the implications of the breakup and it being hard, she said, “It was very hard because he made it very public from the start. He put out a press release and all of that so it just got put in my face.”
