To get one up on the LIV golf series, staunch PGA supporters Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are reportedly planning to introduce a new PGA Tour ‘stadium’ competition. The proposed project has been in the making for some years and will be in collaboration with the PGA Tour.

What is this new golf tour all about?

A brainchild of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, the competition is seen as PGA’s way forward in evolving and competing with the lucrative LIV series. According to Golfweek, it will be a series of one-day events that will complement rather than conflict with the existing PGA events.

Interestingly, these events are said to be technology-driven. It will be staged before a live audience in a non-green grass, stadium environment.

When will it take place?

If reports are to be believed, these unprecedented events will take place in the early months of 2024, complementing PGA events from January through to March. A grand finale is also expected to feature later, though the PGA will be wary of the response from the golf community for the same.

Does the PGA back this tech-based event?

The proposed plan was discussed among some of the best players in the world alongside PGA Tour executives last week. The unofficial meet took place at Hotel Du Pont, located in Wilmington, before the BMW Championship, and lasted more than 3 hours.

Tiger Woods was seen getting down in Delaware to join some of the top players in discussing the way forward for the PGA Tour. Aside from discussing various topics such as the representation of younger players and competition among the top pros, it seems like the complimentary events were briefed to the top 22 Tour players at the meeting and passed on to PGA Tour chief, Jay Monahan.

Are Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy friends?

It is reported that the two joined hands on the project a couple of years ago after realizing they shared a common objective. Woods and McIlroy have shared a close bond – they are both sponsored by Nike, although the former remains the merchandise’s No.1 client.

“We’re all great players but we’re not Tiger Woods,” McIlroy had said after the meeting in Delaware. “He is the hero that we’ve all looked up to and his voice carries further than anyone else’s in the game of golf. His role is navigating us to a place where we all think we should be.”

More information is expected to be made public by PGA Commissioner, Jay Monahan, who will address it in his press conference scheduled for Tuesday at East Lake Golf Club. Watch this space for further developments.
