In the past, Phil Mickelson has also been considered for the position. The discussions dwindled swiftly after his involvement with the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit last year. Too much for both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson

Davis Love, the two-time Ryder Cup captain, recently discussed Tiger Woods taking over as Ryder Cup captain in 2025 during a conversation at the PGA Tour Champions’ Furyk & Friends. Love expressed doubts that Woods would accept the captaincy, but also expressed hope that he would.

Love, who served as Team USA’s vice-captain this year in Rome, also mentioned having the captaincy conversation with Woods and Lefty Phil Mickelson back when he was Team America’s captain.

The 2022 Open Championship incident featuring Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods

Recently, sportswriter Alan Shipnuck published a book titled “LIV and Let Die,” and the book has since become the source of golf world gossip, revealing backstories and incidents that fans were unaware of. One such incident was Phil Mickelson’s absence from the R&A Clubhouse private dinner for the 2022 Open Championship.

Mickelson has since explained to the public that the R&A had advised him not to attend the social event because it would have been awkward given that Mickelson was then working closely with LIV Golf. According to a new update in Shipnuck’s book, Tiger Woods was the one who asked R&A not to invite Mickelson to the gathering because it would be awkward. It was also revealed that Woods sought approval from other veterans attending the dinner before sending the message to the R&A Clubhouse.
