Larger prize purse, smaller field: more benefits

The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am started on the PGA Tour in 1937 as Crosby Clambake after Bill Crosby, host of the event. Previously, the field of players was over 180. After 2010, it was 156 pros and 156 amateurs. The larger field size was logistically a hassle.

This year, as the tournament has been added to the signature events, the field has become limited to 80 players and 80 amateurs. Pairs would fill more drama and action to the smaller field. Moreover, the courtesy of becoming the signature event, the prize purse has been changed as well.

From $9 million in 2023, from which the winner would have acquired $1.62 million, it has now changed to $20 million, with the winner getting $3.6 million. Additionally, instead of 500 FedExCup points, the winner will be awarded 700 points. As for the format, the amateurs will not be playing for all four days.

The amateurs will play for the first two days, while the pros will play all four rounds. So, is there no cut? Yes, the 2024 Pro-Am will not have the traditional 54-hole cut for the pros. The pros will have the benefit of playing all rounds as the field is limited.

More OWGR points and one less course

This year’s field rating of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am is going off the charts. There are 41 top players from the OWGR top 50 participating in the event. Nosferatu reported it on X that the OWGR points awarded would be the greatest for a nonmajor or PLAYER Championship event.

The winner is projected to gain points between 74.5 to 75, which is the highest in OWGR’s history for any ordinary event. The Pro-Am had the traditional three-course rotation between the Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, and Monterey Peninsula Country Club. However, now the MPCC has been removed from the rotation.

Moreover, Spyglass Hill GC will only be used for the first two days; Thursday and Friday. It is going to be the first PB Pro-Am for World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Young, Hideki Matsuyama, and Collin Morikawa. While Nick Dunlap, Ludvig Aberg, Tom Kim, and Nicolai Hojgaard will play the course for the first time. The event is scheduled to start on February 1st and will be televised on the Golf Channel for all four days, while CBS broadcasts the last two days.
