“To get a potential sponsor in South Africa and to get a tournament in South Africa, which we are still trying to do, they wanted the four of us,” Louis Oosthuizen had told Golf Monthly earlier in 2025 after Branden Grace had signed a new two-year contract with LIV Golf. Grace joined the South African team, Stinger GC, which contains Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, and Dean Burmester. And now, LIV has seemingly lived up to its goal. The Stinger GC will have an event to call their home.
In stunning and sudden news, South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, revealed that discussions are very much hitting a crescendo in terms of having a LIV Golf event happen in their country. He explained that he is close to bringing LIV to South Africa in the “very near future.”
“We are very close to bringing the world’s most exciting golf tournament, @LIVGolfNation, to South Africa. 54 of the world’s top golfers will descend on South African soil in the very near future. I want to thank @stingergc_crew; we’re nearly there, boys,” he wrote on X.

If LIV Golf succeeds in getting a base in South Africa, it will be the 10th different country and fifth different continent they will be active in. It will help the global branding of the Tour, which wants the circuit to be more like Formula 1 and have a more worldwide appeal than the PGA Tour, which is mainly centered around the United States of America. For context, all of the first seven events of LIV Golf have happened in seven different countries, with three different continents involved. Even Formula 1 hasn’t found a foothold in the African continent, so this will be a huge step for Scott O’Neil and Co. in their bid to globalize the golf they have on offer.

This is highly motivating news for LIV Golf fans, as the league seems to be taking a new, fresh step now and then, putting them at an exponential pace for growth. And with news of a fresh injection of funds from the Saudi-backed Public Investment Fund, the chances for more news similar to this are possible.
PIF puts fresh funds into LIV Golf
The parent company of LIV Golf, LIV Golf Investments, had increased its share capital twice already in 2025, and we are not even halfway through the year yet. Its latest set of funds came in April 2025, when $344.3 million was added. Earlier in January, a $330 million injection of funds was made, making the total for this year $674.3 million already. By certain estimates, that figure could reach $1 billion by August, assuming a third capital addition is done.

What’s your perspective on:
Will LIV Golf's move to South Africa finally put the PGA Tour on notice?
Have an interesting take?
Money in Sport had previously predicted that the total investment by PIF in LIV Golf could reach $5 billion by the end of 2025. Right now, the number stands very close to that prediction, with $4.58 billion spent for the PGA Tour competitor. This includes an addition of $1.9 billion since January of last year.
Do you think LIV Golf can make further landmark changes in the game of golf in the years to come? Or do you think they are only good till the money keeps coming?
