‘Bobby Jones Would Turn Over in His Grave’ – Gary Player Urges Rule Change in Golf

Everyone has a different stance on the controversial distance debate in golf. However, it is difficult to come to a conclusion as to what seems to be the right way forward. Veteran golfer Gary Player recently gave his thoughts and expressed concern regarding the same.

The Aramco Team Series event recently came to a thrilling end at the Glen Oaks Club in Long Island, New York. After some incredible performances, Jessica Korda’s team claimed the title at this event, which was being played to promote women’s golf. Player was also present at this event.

Gary Player is amongst the biggest ambassadors of golf and is also a promoter and avid supporter of women’s golf. Recently, the veteran golfer sat for an interview, where he talked about the state of golf. He also gave his thoughts on distance rollback. Let’s take a look at what he said.

‘Change is the price for survival’- Gary Player on distance debate

The 3-time Masters champion believes that the increasing distance will be detrimental for the future of golf. He said, “They’re going to have to do something to curtail the ball. They don’t want to, they’re reluctant to, but they’re going to have to.”

Well, Player will definitely be happy with the new rule introduced by USGA and R&A, which prohibits the use of irons above 46 inches. Talking of Bobby Jones, who helped design the Augusta National Golf course and also co-founded the Master’s Tournament, Player said, “Otherwise, they’re going to drive the first green at Augusta. Bobby Jones would turn over in his grave if he saw that!

“They’re hitting wedge into par-5s! Change is the price of survival,” Player added. “For the weekend golfer, leave it as it is. Let them play with what they want and enjoy themselves. But I’m quite concerned about pro golf in that regard. Where are we going?”

During the same interview, Player also commented on the negligence of women’s golf, a cause he is a passionate supporter of.
