The blanket finish at the BMW PGA Championship was enjoyed by everyone around the golf world. However, a lot more drama unfolded off the course too. After the first round, Sergio Garcia withdrew from the Tournament for an undisclosed reason. Moreover, the golfer was seen watching a college football game just a few hours later. The DP World Tour has finally decided to take action according to the rulebook which may end up with the Spaniard paying a fine.
Garcia recorded a score of 76 in the opening round. Before the start of the second round, the golfer decided to pull out of the tournament. No statement regarding the exit was made by Garcia or his management.

Moreover the 42-year-old was later seen at the Texas vs. Alabama college football game in Austin, which kicked off at noon ET that same day. However, Garcia is now on the verge of getting fined by the DP World Tour unless he provides “medical evidence deemed reasonable”.
DP World Tour to fine Sergio Garcia
As per the DP World Tour’s Handbook, “a player is not entitled to withdraw at the conclusion of the first round or during the play of any round of a tournament“. However, in case of a medical emergency, the rule can be voided.

Since Garcia has not yet given a reason for his withdrawal, he could be fined by the DP World Tour. Moreover, his presence at the college football game received furthermore backlash from the public. The Spaniard also shared a photo of himself along with his wife from the football game in Austin.

The handbook also adds that “written evidence of medical circumstances” must be forwarded to the tournament director or entries department within 21 days of the player’s withdrawal and “a player not observing this regulation will be fined.” Sergio Garcia’s participation at the European Tour’s flagship event was already under massive scrutiny due to his involvement in LIV Golf. Nonetheless, he was allowed to compete at Wentworth.
Despite all the controversy, Garcia will be competing at the next LIV Golf event in Chicago. Whether he does have an injury or not, is not yet disclosed. Sooner or later, the 42-year-old may get fined, but considering the $35 million he earned on the course thanks to LIV Golf, the fine from the DP World Tour shouldn’t be a problem.
