Both fans and golfers hoped to see some action at the Ryder Cup star-packed 2025 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Four Ryder Cup stars, including Tyrrell Hatton, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, and Robert MacIntyre, were competing against each other just days after a historic win at Bethpage Black. However, the excitement soon waned as the weather conditions became severe.

The play is suspended for the second day in a row now, as a storm is causing chaos on the golf course. High 60 mph winds have disrupted the game. After the first round, the DP World Tour even had to adapt to the LIV Golf format and announce a shotgun start to shorten the play. Play was stopped at 16:14 local time on Friday after all three venues, the Old Course, Kingsbarns, and Carnoustie, became waterlogged and unplayable. Organizers shared an update that the second round would start at 08:00 local time, and the third round would be a shotgun start across all three courses at 12:30.

Despite the rare shotgun start, many groups of players were starting from the same tee on some holes. Ryder Cup stars Robert MacIntyre and Tyrrell Hatton were teeing off the seventh hole just 10 minutes after Jordan Smith and Eddie Pepperell. Despite all these efforts, they still couldn’t finish Round 3. Just 20 minutes into the game, the storm brought havoc again. Organizers had no choice but to suspend the play again for the second consecutive day.

In fact, the condition is so bad that all golf scheduled across the three venues is cancelled for Saturday, October 4, 2025. The DP World Tour has now scheduled Round 3 as a two-tee start on all courses between 09:00 and 11:23 on Sunday, October 5.

At the end of round two, Ryder Cup star Robert MacIntyre is right at the top of the leaderboard with 12-under par, tied with Richard Sterne. Following them are Louis Oosthuizen and Tapio Pulkkanen, tied at second. LIV Golf star Brooks Koepka is tied at 15th along with Matt Fitzpatrick and others. The other two Ryder Cup stars, Tommy Fleetwood and Tyrrell Hatton, are further behind at T22.

Golfers have tried to stay positive. “It was almost a perfect round of golf, especially once the weather came in, just a lovely round,” said Robert MacIntyre at the end of Round 1 on Friday. “It’s difficult when it gets this windy. It’s hard to hit the ball good with the wind. I was having to try and fight the wind on certain holes and wasn’t comfortable. But I made some beautiful shots. Yeah, putted solidly in the wind,” the Scottish golfer continued. He managed to hit 7 birdies and a single bogey to complete at 12-under par.

While the golfers are trying to stay positive, the fans are clearly frustrated. Let’s see what fans have to say about this.

Fans slam DP World Tour for suspended play at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

The update about the suspension of Round 3 was shared on X by the official Alfred Dunhill Links Championship’s handle. The post garnered over 17k views in a very short time. And it is easy to see that fans are clearly not happy with what’s happening. And one can’t blame them. If they are hoping to see their favorite golfers compete after a 15-13 victory over Team USA at the 2025 Ryder Cup, but they can’t enjoy it because play is suspended for two days straight, frustration is natural.

One fan blamed the organizers for hosting the tour in October. “Dunhill Cup always sh–e weather yet the organisers insist in playing it in October, while tournaments like the Spanish Open, Portugal Open and Andalucia Masters are played in the height of Summer….surely it’s not rocket science for them swap dates?” It just makes so much sense to organize the tour a little earlier in the year. Scotland in October features cool, often rainy, and unpredictable weather. And it’s not even the first time play has been interrupted.

The same thing happened in 2023, when the play was extended until Monday to finish the tour. Echoing similar feelings, another fan wrote, “I’ve been to too many Dunhill Links comps that have been complete miserable washouts. You need to reschedule this to August- no majors that month.”

There were a few who highlighted clear weather forecast warnings. “The worst event on tour. too many people, too many courses, wrong time of the year. complete mo–ns when forecast said high winds all along, total sh–show of planning by johans group,” wrote one fan. Many weather forecast channels and agencies, including the UK Met Office, gave clear warnings due to storms.

Another user wrote something along the same lines, “I know they had to try, but the forecast had said today was just as bad as yesterday was never going to get played.” Weather forecast organizations predicted the gusts to reach up to 80 mph, and they were right. The winds were so cruel that even golfers’ umbrellas weren’t able to withstand them. Many umbrellas simply broke, leaving fans and athletes to face the weather’s havoc on their own.

While most fans wrote about their feelings, one fan tapped into the commerce. “Goof luck attracting celebs next year after this. johan better dig deep in his pockets to pay them to come,” wrote the fan. Both the PGA Tour and DP World Tour are facing problems with declining viewership. And events like this can further dent their image. The comment taps into the reality that such experiences can demotivate star golfers from attending the tour. For those who don’t know, Johann Rupert is a South African billionaire businessman. He founded the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, and his company hosts the event.

The weather forecast shows that conditions may become less cruel from here on. Fans will have to wait a little more to see who wins the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship when Round 3 resumes on Sunday.
