While the American side is prepping for the Ryder Cup at the Procore Championship, Bryson DeChambeau is left alone to make his own preparations. But with this self-introspection, Bryson has discovered a major weakness that might add to his stakes at Bethpage.

He recently played at the Tour 18 golf course as part of his “Can I Break the Course Record on Golf’s Most Famous Holes?” YouTube video series. On the ninth hole, after missing the 28-foot putt for a birdie, the golfer blurted out in frustration, “All right. That’s frustrating. Again, this is wedges, man. Got to dial in those wedges somehow. Got to get like a motion that doesn’t create like a massive gapping in my wedges for some reason. I don’t know why that happens. It’s so crazy. It’s good one day and then horrible the next.”

The golfer uses PING Glide 4.0 wedges (45°, 50°, 56°, and 60°) with LA Golf BAD Prototype Rebar shafts. However, his performance in that area has been concerning, as the APP stats have reached the same level as those of his 2017-2018 year. The golfer who once achieved +0.8 in 2018 with SG APP has now fallen below 0, which is the worst since 2017.

Moreover, this was not an instance of only one hole.

On his next wedge shot, too, he said, “What? What is that? That’s disappointing.” The chip shot ‌after a few bounces stopped 12 ft before the hole, leaving him quite disappointed. This led to him completing the hole in par instead of a birdie. After putting, Dechambeau let out a big vent, “Screw you, wedges. You’re just making it interesting.” He also added, “Hate my wedges. Embarrassing. Embarassing. Embarrassing.” Well, this frustration continued as he failed to break the course record, which is nine under 63. The LIV golfer ended his 18-hole stretch with seven under 65.

Well, this is not new for him, as earlier, DeChambeau struggled with his wedge game at Quail Hollow as well. He sahred his thoughts about his after his round, “Wedge play needs to be cleaned up a little bit. Yeah, take more advantage of the par-5s and short par-4s for me.” During that event, he was ranked first in Strokes Gained Off-the-Tee, but 79th on Approach-the-Green, which later went further down to 111th.

With Keegan Bradley already facing difficulty of who to pair the Mad Scientist with, this added worry in skill does not sound good for Captain America.

Earlier, just before the Procore Championship, the captain hinted at the ongoing worry for DeChambeau’s pairing by saying he is done with 90% of pairings figured out. The Underdog Golf post shared the update, as it wrote, “Keegan Bradley said he has about 90% of the pairings, lineups figured out for Bethpage. One of our goals was to have the guys prepared, ready to know who they’re playing with. Especially in alternate shot, I think that’s more important.”

Moreover, critics had already pointed the shortcomings of pairing the LIV Golfer, due to an enormous difference in his playing style and past trouble playing foursomes. But luckily, Johnson Wagner has predicted the most suitable pair for DeChambeau that would help him play all five sessions at the Ryder Cup.

Johnson Wagner on Bryson DeChambeau’s Ryder Cup pair

Wagner, while appearing in the 5 Clubs podcast, addressed the issue with a probable pair. Talking about his pairing options, he said, “I think there’s only one option, and especially if it’s alternate shot.” He pointed, “It’s Cameron Young,” as he carries the same game style, which will complement DeChambeau’s. Well, not just that, he brought up the ball preference as well.

Talking further, he said, “Bryson is so crazy with his spin rates and launch angles. He’s not going to play anybody else’s ball. He plays a very specific prototype Titleist golf ball.” The LIV golfer uses the Titleist Pro V1X Doubt Dot ball, which suits his aggressive play and high spin rate. Well, interestingly, he figured out that Cameron Young uses the same ball and achieved a great result. Wagner said, “Guess who won their first event, their first week playing that ball? It was Cameron Young.” The Ryder Cup debutant won his first PGA Tour title this year, which was the Wyndham Championship. And notably, it came with his new ball, which is the same as DeChambeau’s.

Now having the same ball and play style, Cameron Young is the best-suited player for DeChambeau. Interestingly, if the duo achieves excellent results in the first few sessions, it will guarantee more participation for the LIV golfer, who has never played more than two sessions.
