At LIV Golf events, tension often has less to do with the leaderboard and more to do with moments that test a player’s composure. Maybe it’s the unique format. Maybe it’s the atmosphere. Either way, it doesn’t take much for things to spill over. That’s exactly what happened with Bryson DeChambeau at the LIV UK event this year.

The hecklers at the JCB Golf and Country Club crossed the line by saying, “Miss it.” DeChambeau didn’t say a word during the play, but as he was making his way from the fans back to the field, he replied, “I love the banter up there, but they can’t be saying ‘miss it, miss it’…” He doesn’t mind a few jokes thrown his way on the course; that’s part of what keeps the crowd engaged. We all remember the time he lost his shoe to an Australian fan in a putting contest. Or how he hands out balls to his young fans to keep them happy. However, comments like “miss it” can shake a player’s focus and performance, and golf is a game of focus.

Considering DeChambeau’s past and his history of fiery behavior on the course, his calm comment this time stands out. In the past, DeChambeau hasn’t exactly built a reputation of being a ‘good boy.’ Back in 2020, when DeChambeau was still on the PGA Tour, his temper often grabbed as much attention as his golf game. He was known for shouting things like “Come on, Tim!” at his caddie, which he insists was frustration at himself, not at Tim. That same year at the Rocket Classic, he found himself in hot water again.

That time, it was for snapping at a cameraman. While in contention to win, DeChambeau grew irritated when the cameraman filmed him closely as he got out of a bunker and walked toward the green, asking if it was really necessary to be that close. These moments cemented his bad reputation, something he’s been trying to shake off.

In a recent video with Adam Sandler, the star of Happy Gilmore 2, in which DeChambeau also played a role, he showed a different side of himself. Instead of fiery outbursts, he talked about keeping his cool. DeChambeau admitted he used to get angry a lot on the course, but now he’s focused on controlling his reactions, saying he doesn’t want kids to see him losing his temper.

So when you work hard on staying calm, it shows. DeChambeau kept his composure on the course, and with a solid performance tied for 11th at LIV UK; comments like those can still shake a player’s confidence. Understandably, he confronted the hecklers the way he did. But instead of gaining sympathy, DeChambeau faced plenty of criticism from fans over his reaction.

What fans are saying about Bryson DeChambeau’s recent interaction

One fan threw a direct jab, saying, “Bryson is soft as a feather.” It wasn’t the first time DeChambeau has been called this. In 2022, he had his infamous “Great Rope Incident” at a LIV Golf event in Chicago, where, while ducking under a gallery rope, he misjudged the height and walked straight into it, catching himself in the face. He dropped to his knees, rubbed his eye, and complained he couldn’t see. The clip went viral instantly, not because the injury was serious but because the over-the-top reaction became prime meme material. For many fans, it only added to his “soft” reputation.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Bryson DeChambeau's 'soft' reputation fair, or is he just misunderstood by fans?

Have an interesting take?

Another fan said DeChambeau “gets paid millions and millions of dollars to play a meaningless tournament. What a crybaby.” LIV Golf events have fixed prize money of about $20 million. On the other hand, only a few PGA Tour events like the Memorial Tournament and Travelers Championship have purses that big; most of their tournaments have way less. Even though the golfer makes a ton of money, some fans still think his reaction to heckling makes him look like a crybaby.

The next one was even tougher, saying, “Wah! The little boy can’t take criticism then he shouldn’t be playing!” These kinds of comments show how divided fans are about how the LIV star handles himself on the course.

One fan put it simply, saying, “Money talks brother. You made your bed…” DeChambeau joined LIV Golf in 2022, drawn by the big contracts and prize money after leaving the PGA Tour. By signing up for LIV, many fans feel he knew exactly what he was getting into, including the different crowd and the heckling that comes with it.

Some fans took a different angle, saying, “He needs to worry about his acting career.” This comment refers to the golfer’s recent role in Happy Gilmore 2, which was released just four days ago. While DeChambeau took on an important part in the movie, many fans weren’t impressed with his acting skills. Meanwhile, fellow golfers like John Daly and Scottie Scheffler stood out and received praise for their performances.

DeChambeau’s shift toward calm shows growth, but fan opinions remain divided. On and off the course, changing his image won’t be easy; only time will tell if he succeeds.
