To put it simply, Bryson DeChambeau‘s performance at the Ryder Cup didn’t carry the sparks it promised. Entering the greens with the US flag draped over and a hot birdie putt, things went south real quick. However, what truly turned hearts was DeChambeau’s reaction to his losses. Instead of taking accountability, the LIV golfer shifted the blame outward. Needless to say, fans caught on, and it’s pretty safe to say that their reactions were merciless.

The LIV golfer had paired with both veteran Justin Thomas and rookie Ben Griffin. But he didn’t have luck with anyone on the greens. Losing two crucial points to the European team, DeChambeau crushed the squad’s hopes for the first day. Reflecting on his day, DeChambeau remarked, “0-2 today, pretty disappointed. I played good golf, just not good enough, and they made everything. Luck is on their side right now.”
However, as self-aware as this comment might be, it is distancing DeChambeau from the blame and turning it to external factors. Instead of acknowledging his mistakes or owning responsibility for the losses, the LIV golfer turned the focus to his opponents’ flawless execution.

Adding fuel to the flame, the “luck” remark doesn’t make things better. DeChambeau has already experienced a lot of criticism, questioning his position in team-based formats. However, a better look at how his matches unravelled paints a clearer picture of the ridicule that followed the comment.

The first match on Friday started with a foursomes session between Justin Thomas and Bryson DeChambeau against Tyrell Hatton and Jon Rahm. While the American team took an early 1-up lead with DeChambeau’s birdie, the tides soon shifted. Team Europe dominated the greens on the front nine with incredible shots on 6 & 7 holes to tie the score with DeChambeau and Thomas. Hatton delivered a long putter on the 12th, and more birdies poured in. Meanwhile, more than an hour had passed since Team USA’s hole wins. Ultimately, the American duo lost the European challengers 4&3, marking the first heartbreak of the day.
On DeChambeau’s second start, too, the LIV golfer failed to turn the game around. Paired with the Ryder Cup rookie, Ben Griffin, against Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose, the audience braced for a spine-chilling match. The US team set some motion with Bryson’s birdie on the 4th and Griffin’s 56-foot birdie on the 7th. But Rose soon answered with his own 41-footer. Fleetwood’s precision iron play delivered clutch birdies on 11, 14, and 16, giving Europe control. Bryson birdied 17 to keep hopes alive, taking it to the 18th. Rose drained another clutch birdie on the final hole to seal a 1-up win for Europe.
Unsurprisingly, DeChambeau’s defensive remarks didn’t go unnoticed, sparking a wave of candid and often ruthless fan reactions.
Fans weigh in against Bryson DeChambeau
When Brentley Romine, writer for the Golf Channel, shared Bryson DeChambeau’s comments, fans flooded in with brutal digs at the LIV golfer. Expressing strong disapproval of DeChambeau’s back-handed remark and criticizing his performance, they didn’t hesitate to call him out. One fan didn’t mince words when they sarcastically pointed out what actually caused the win. They commented: “Nope, not much Bryson. Teamwork, preparation and a lack of reliance on flag waving.” At the same time, others took a sharper jab at the LIV golfer.
Commenting on the team’s inability to own their losses, one fan quipped: “The ‘they made everything’ and ‘luck’ talking points have started 2 days earlier than normal.” While another fan commented two laughing emojis, ridiculing DeChambeau’s defensive statement. Another didn’t hesitate when throwing their snide comment directly at DeChambeau: “What a dork.”

One fan reposted Romine’s tweet with a GIF, captioned: “What a loser.” This reflects the fan’s strong disapproval of Bryson’s performance, directly calling out his failure. Another staff writer for the PGA Tour made a sarcastic comment, calling out the stupidity of the “luck” comment: “Europe always seems to make more putts and get luckier.” While yet another fan called out DeChambeau’s unaccountable character, adding: “Luck???? What a clown.”
Overall, fans were quick to mock and criticize DeChambeau, seizing on both his performance and his defensive remarks. The reaction highlights how swiftly public perception can shift when expectations aren’t met.
