Sports entities often taste fame with their impressive performances. However, there are also players who are short of extraordinary records but still succeed in getting the same fame. One such player is John Daly. Scrolling through his career, Daly’s biggest achievements have been winning the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1995 Open Championship. However, going back in time, he once took a shot at becoming the first golfer to make a unique world record.

After suffering a downfall in the previous year, Daly made an impressive comeback in 2004. Comeback, that led the now 56-year-old to win the PGA Tour Comeback of the year. Building further on that, in 2005, Daly reached the majestic Niagara falls for his attempt to make a Guinness World Record. A Guinness World Record to hit a ball from one end of the falls to the other i.e. from Canada to the USA!
John Daly makes an attempt to hit across the Niagara Falls
With his Dunlop LoCo driver in hand, a 36-year-old John Daly headed to the iconic Table Rock Centre on the Canadian side of the Niagara Falls. Having a gathering of about 5000 people, he took his position at a raised platform overlooking the falls. Having the urge to get his name in the prestigious record book, the California born golf star took about 20 shots directed towards the Goat Island in the United States.

However, despite giving his all, he failed to cross the the 3200 feet wide falls. As per reports, the closest he got was the rock face wall on the American side. Opening up about the attempts, he said, “I think the balls hit the mist and would just fall to the river.”

The Niagara falls is known for its heavy, wet mist and the strong gusts of winds. Factors, that clearly played a major role in the failed attempts of Daly. Elaborating further on the conditions, he said, “I could see the ball, but once it got to the mist it disappeared. I hit eight of them as good as I can hit them but they just seemed to hit a wall.”

While he failed to write his name in the Guinness records, the in-fame player seemed to be largely mesmerized with the love from fans. “The people here are terrific. It’s like being at a PGA Tour event. It was like coming down the home stretch winning a PGA Tour event,” he said.

Despite failing in the attempt, Daly made sure to leave his mark in the hearts of the spectators. Following the event, he took part in a fundraiser parade, raising $12,000 for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Niagara Falls.
Making a similar attempt, in 2019, world long drive champion, Maurice Allen finally succeeded in hitting across the Niagara falls. As per reports, Allen hit a 426 yard drive to register his name in the Guinness World Records.
