We all know that recently, TGL announced an expansion to their current setup. Motor City Golf Club will be the 7th team that will be a part of the franchise-based league. The addition of a new team means that the league is ready for growth and change. Previous comments hinted at the inclusion of LPGA pros, too, as part of this growth. “I’ve been bugging these guys about the LPGA deal for a minute. They have been very interested. It’s just these things take time, and I’m not allowed to make any news,” Alexis Ohanian, who is the owner of the Los Angeles Golf Club, stated at the CAA World Congress of Sports in Nashville. Even Arthur Blank, who owns the Atlanta Drive GC, the 2025 TGL champions, stated during a match that “potentially, there will be gals involved” in the coming editions. Gals are equally interested!

Nelly Korda and Megan Khang had expressed interest in TGL through their socials. Nelly, when she posted a Keegan Bradley image, comparing him with Luigi, showcasing that she watches TGL. Rose Zhang is already a minority owner of the Bay Golf Club.  Jeeno Thitikul, during the HSBC Women’s World Championship, said she’d love to play indoor golf. “I think it should be fun (indoor golf). It should be fun in the off-season,” the Thai golfer stated. Charley Hull would love a concept of a “fun” event too, probably just like TGL’s?

Ahead of the Riviera Maya Open in Mexico, Brit golfer Charley Hull was asked about the potential for a mixed event. “Yeah, well, we have one at the end of the year, the Grant Thornton, which is a really fun event. Obviously we have a lot of players on our tour and a lot of players on their tour, so it’s kind of hard to do it all the time,” the LPGA pro stated.

Hull participated in the first edition of the Grant Thornton Invitational in 2023 alongside fellow Brit golfer Justin Rose. They finished T9 with a score of 20 under par across the three rounds. Despite the combination of PGA and LPGA members, this one is not an official event on either the PGA or the LPGA Tours but is one of the fan favorites, as they get to see the best of both worlds together.

“But fun events like that, I think, are good for the game and get a bit more of an atmosphere, and almost—you get fans watching it that probably don’t watch the LPGA Tour and vice versa.” Hull further added. Well, Hull’s wish might happen sooner than later. TGL, or the Tours, is not the only one interested in the mixed-gender event. Lately, it has been the talk of the town.

Mixed events are growing, even at bigger stages

Earlier this year, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) made a decision. On April 9, the IOC let the world know that the 2028 edition held in Los Angeles will have several new medals up for grabs in various events. One such event is golf, where the IOC has planned to include a mixed team event. “The mixed events are a real, true embodiment of gender equality—men and women competing on the same team, on the same field of play for their country,” IOC sports director Kit McConnell said in a news conference.

There have been speculations and talks in the air regarding possible potential teams. A dual World No. 1 pairing in Scottie Scheffler and Nelly Korda could be the clincher for the United States in their home Olympics. What about the brother-sister pair of Minjee Lee and Min Woo Lee? The Canadian duo of Corey Conners and Brooke Henderson could be dangerous, and so can Sungjae Im and Haeran Ryu from South Korea. The possibilities are endless.

What’s your perspective on:

Will the inclusion of LPGA pros in TGL finally bring the gender equality golf desperately needs?

Have an interesting take?

It will not be a long time before words change into action. With the addition of a new team, TGL has indicated that expansion is part of their agenda, and the next natural step is to add women to the fold. Charley Hull’s idea might come to fruition very quickly.
