Every golf lover remembers the 1948 U.S. Open at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California, northwest of Los Angeles. The course became known as “Hogan’s Alley” because it was his third win at Riviera in less than 18 months. Ted Rhodes became the first African-American to play in the U.S. Open since 1913, finishing in 51st place.

But after that, the U.S. Open was hosted in places other than Los Angeles due to several reasons, including the need for more suitable golf courses and the reluctance of LACC to host the event. The LACC was historically reclusive, and it was reluctant to host the event in the past. The closest it got to hosting a major was the 1986 U.S. Open, which was voted down 5-4.
