Bubba Watson might be munching over burritos before heading to this year’s Champions dinner in Augusta. The former Masters champion, who generally serves up his comfort food—beans, potatoes, cornbread, vanilla ice cream.. (you get the idea)—is likely to have a hard time digesting Jon Rahm’s choice of menu.

Jon Rahm’s basque platter got everyone hunting for what former Masters champions served. A netizen unearthed Watson’s picks for the 2013 Championship dinner on X (formerly Twitter). While the internet was drooling over Rahm’s Spanish delicacy, Watson’s ‘Applebees’ platter became a subject of ridicule in no time.

Watson raked up two Green Jackets in 2012 and 2014. However, one thing that stayed the same was Watson’s choice of food. This was in the 2013 Masters Championship dinner: Caesar salad, grilled beans, mashed potatoes, cornbread, macaroni and cheese, and vanilla ice cream. Two years later, the menu stayed the same. Up to the tee.

Watson’s first Masters was a sudden death triumph over Louis Oosthuizen. The second came with a three-shot victory, leaving 20-year-old Jordan Spieth in despair. But his mantra of keeping it simple didn’t change in the span of two years. Interestingly, the two-time Major winner explained his choice last year after Scottie Scheffler unveiled his menu.

Normally I eat before, eat a couple of burritos before I go to the dinner because I don’t know what they’re going to have. Well, he won’t exactly be salivating after Jon Rahm’s carte de jour. But whatever his reason is, netizens feel Watson could’ve done better. At least when he had the chance twice.

A waster of grand Masters opportunity, the Internet proclaims

Watson’s choice of menu shocked quite a few and outraged others. While a small section of netizens also sympathized with the 12-time PGA Tour winner. Also, some found this a good opportunity to remind the world of Nick Faldo’s famous Masters dinner.

By putting the two menus next to each other, comparisons were bound to happen, and that’s exactly what one fan chose to do. Though the user did hint towards a bit of bias towards Rahm’s, Iberian ham, Spanish omelet, creamy chicken fritters, and black truffles, among many things, and commented, “Maybe I’m partial bc I’m Basque but next to Rahm’s dazzling menu, this looks like takeout from Applebees.”

One fan found Watson’s platter straight-upEmbarrassing.” A win at the Augusta is no easy feat, and the user chose to iterate just the same in their tweet: “You only win the Masters once if you’re lucky Bubba. This for sure is the cheapest meal ever served, & since the bill goes to the winner, maybe that’s the motivation.” According to the user, the two-time Masters Champion had wasted the Champions dinner privilege.

The reigning Masters champions pay the bill. Bernhard Langer, a two-time Masters champion, admitted that it does cost a fortune. As he told Golf.com a few years ago, “The bill for the two meals was quite hefty, especially when you add in the drinks, but I didn’t mind one bit.” Some believe Watson was the complete opposite of a Masters Champion’s spirit.

However, Watson’s dinner certainly has precedence in history. Well, one golf enthusiast went back to the Champions Dinner archives and shared what Nick Faldo served after his last triumph at the Masters in 1997 and hilariously stated, “I see you Bubba Watson and raise you Nick Faldo. “Nick Faldo, 1997: Fish and chips, tomato soup.”

One fan was quite astonished and noted, “and then he had the *exact same* menu when he won the second time.” Watson served the same menu two years later, and in his defense, he wanted to go with his comfort food. Something that resonated with a few people. Take the following user comment for example, “But that is the essence of Bubba. He was true to himself.”. They feel that’s the ‘essence’ of Bubba Watson. He keeps it real and simple.

Bubba Watson received enough flak in 2014 for his ‘run-of-the-mill’ choice. It turns out that a decade later, the world still hasn’t gotten over it.
