The PGA Tour’s future is up in the air—and we don’t say that lightly. The Tour’s search for a CEO has been ongoing for months, and the lack of a final decision has left many wondering what’s next. Since joining the PGA Tour Policy Board, Tiger Woods has become a fierce advocate for protecting the Tour’s integrity and ensuring players have a real say in decisions. Jay Monahan, meanwhile, has had to adapt, working much more closely with Woods and other top pros to keep the peace and move the Tour forward. Now, the word is that Commissioner Monahan is set to stay on and work alongside the new appointee, who will be responsible for growing the commercial side of the business and expanding the PGA Tour’s reach through media and entertainment.

According to insiders,  David Abeles, TaylorMade President & CEO and a close friend of Tiger Woods, is facing tough competition for the role from NASCAR Commissioner Steve Phelps. Phelps’s potential candidacy comes as a surprise, given his recent promotion to NASCAR’s first modern commissioner. Despite this, sources suggest he’s still a strong contender, thanks to his success in revitalizing NASCAR since 2018 and his reputation in the sports business community. However, Phelps’s passion for NASCAR might keep him in his current role.

Moreover, Abeles brings a wealth of golf industry expertise and strong connections to the table, including his close relationship with Woods. Abeles and Woods have a long-standing relationship. In 2017, Abeles expressed his excitement about partnering with Woods, saying, “It’s hard not to be overly excited about having Tiger back.” He praised Woods’s impact on the game, noting that he “moves the needle in the game unlike any other athlete” and that his energy is infectious. And two years later, Woods won the 2019 Masters, proving Abeles right.

As a longtime TaylorMade executive, Abeles has worked closely with Woods on various projects, including his Sun Day Red apparel brand. Abeles’ experience also includes stints at Acushnet and the Competitor Group, making him a well-rounded candidate.

With multiple candidates on the list, the PGA Tour’s future remains uncertain as it evaluates its options for the CEO position. In December 2023, 21 PGA Tour players (including 2016 Masters champ Danny Willett) demanded transparency from Tour leadership, calling for full disclosure of partnership proposals and a meeting with the policy board to address player impact. But that problem isn’t even the tip of the iceberg.

What’s your perspective on:

Will Tiger Woods' ally David Abeles steer the PGA Tour to new heights, or is Phelps the better choice?

The search committee, led by Arthur Blank and including notable figures like Tiger Woods, Adam Scott, and Sam Kennedy, has been working closely with Korn Ferry to find the perfect candidate. However, the process has been shrouded in secrecy, with few names emerging over the past few months. The negotiations between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund also loom large, with disagreements over LIV Golf’s future creating uncertainty about potential investment in PGA Tour Enterprises.

As the search intensifies and the future of PGA Tour Enterprises hangs in the balance, David Abeles, CEO of TaylorMade, stands out as a figure who reflects the kind of visionary leadership the Tour may be seeking. Whether he’s a candidate or an influential voice behind the scenes, his track record of innovation, brand building, and strong player relationships aligns closely with the strategic direction of the Tour’s new for-profit era.
