DeChambeau holds every word and action of Palmer’s close to his heart. They had a close bond, as was evident when the latter sent out a heart-warming letter to congratulate DeChambeau on winning the DAP Championship, not long after he captured the U.S. Amateur and NCAA Individual Championship. This was before DeChambeau had even turned pro, and merely three weeks before The King passed away on September 25, 2016.

The 8-time PGA Tour winner also revealed that Arnie had advised him to sign an autograph legibly so that people can understand it. “That’s something that stuck with me, and I’ve done it ever since,” DeChambeau said. Palmer was one of the first to sign legible autographs, whose signature became one of the most famous autographs in sports and set an example for the succeeding crop of golfers.

During the same interview, DeChambeau claimed he was inspired by a text from another legend, 15-time Major winner Tiger Woods. “I got Tiger’s text out of the blue; I wasn’t expecting anything. It was obviously personal for the most part, but for him to text me like that was incredible,” DeChambeau said. Woods himself has etched his name in the Invitational tournament, winning it a record 8 times.

“It means the world to me and is nothing short of incredibly special. I got the text from Tiger, who obviously had done really well here and was very instrumental in Mr. Palmer’s life, as Mr. Palmer was to Tiger,” DeChambeau said. “And I think this red cardigan is not only for Mr. Palmer, but I would say it’s a little bit for Tiger as well,” he concluded.
