In a recent video by Ryder Cup Europe, Rory McIlroy jovially addresses his past comments about the Ryder Cup. In 2009, he notably termed the Ryder Cup as merely an “exhibition” and downplayed its importance.

These comments have amusingly stuck with him over the years. His earlier commitment to avoid fist-pumping seems forgotten, and his emotional display at Whistling Straits clearly showed his deep passion for representing Team Europe.

In the video, he said, “I said that in my naivety as a young swashbuckling lad. I know, I have been a part of the Ryder Cup a lot and what those three quotes are couldn’t be further from the truth. Obviously, I had watched Ryder Cups on TV. I cheered for the European team.”

He further added, “I’d played team golf before, but it’s just a completely different environment once you get in there, seeing how much it means to everyone… It’s the purest competition in golf.” For him, it doesn’t get any better. He stated that the feeling of playing and helping your teammates win is irreplaceable.
