Gooch has been in the news ever since his recent back-to-back LIV Golf victories. It was the first time for a player to ever win two events one after the other in the Saudi League. However, despite making $4 million in prize money, the LIV Golf star recently shared something that came as a shock to several golf fans. And it had everything to do with the winner’s share that the player received.

As per his statements while speaking to John Peterson and JJ Killeen, the player disclosed how despite winning 20 percent of the $20 million purse, he actually received a lot less. “It was a little bit disheartening seeing 47 and a half percent because Australian taxes [do] not enter the account,” he mentioned. “It was a big one this last week, but yeah, it s***ed…”

The news hit social media as soon as fans came across the podcast episode. Notably, that led several others to get involved in the matter to put forward their opinions about it. And after a user mentioned how the high taxes could be the reason for PGA Tour players being reluctant to play in Australia, that’s when English professional golfer Eddie Pepperell entered the chat and said, “It absolutely is. It’s also why the UK has a hard time getting top sports stars over more than once a year.”

However, Gooch’s fellow LIV golf buddy, Lee Westwood had a different opinion about the matter. Replying to Pepperell’s statements, Westwood said, “It’s not the reason for Australia Ed but it is a contributing factor for the UK.” Although the golfer had a separate point of view about the issue, he definitely seemed to be on the same side as Gooch regarding the pay cut due to taxes.

As per his statements, Gooch’s total winnings from his victory sum up to nearly $2.1 million despite his $4 million jackpot win. However, it looks like the golfer has made peace with the situation. “I am by no means complaining, but the four [million dollars], once you cut it all up, let’s just say that it’s a lot less than four,” he said during the podcast. Although he didn’t reveal the exact amount he received, it is safe to say that the player suffered nearly a $2 million loss!
