The golfing world has been abuzz with debates and discussions surrounding the status of LIV golfers in major championships. The matter was recently addressed by Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley as well as R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers, who both denied any sort of special exemptions for LIV members.

LIV Golf League had earlier asked for Official World Golf Ranking points. However, this was denied due to its league-based format. Many star players of the league have been pitching for a way to incorporate LIV golfers into the majors.

While Ridley mentioned that the criteria for invitations to the 2024 Masters were not expected to be altered, he left some room for change in the future. He said, “Our qualifications are very much dynamic, and we adjust to what we feel is in the best interest of a tournament representing the best players in the world. We’ll always look at that.”

Without access to OWGR points, LIV players have seen their rankings decline. There are some exceptions like Cameron Smith and Dustin Johnson who remain eligible for the majors. However, players like Talor Gooch have seen their rankings drop significantly.

How are golf rankings calculated?

The Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) is a prominent system that assigns points to golfers. It is based on their performance over two years.

The points earned are divided by the number of events a player participates in resulting in their average, and golfers are then ranked accordingly. The OWGR system also assigns different weights to events, prioritizing more competitive tournaments. Golf rankings serve as valuable references for betting strategies as well as in adding prestige to the name of the golfer.
