Tommy Fleetwood is standing on the cusp of a special milestone. In a few days from now, the English golfer could join an elite list and rub shoulders with the likes of Tiger Woods and Sir Nick Faldo. Fleetwood is aiming for a Nedbank Golf Challenge hat-trick.

The Nedbank Golf Challenge, a DP World Tour event, would be played at the Gary Player Golf Course in Sun City, South Africa, from November 9 to 12. After winning the previous two editions of the tournament in 2019 and 2022 – two years in between had been lost in the COVID-enforced hiatus – Fleetwood is going for three on the spin. He is oozing confidence.

‘You never really feel comfortable’

The NGC saw a thrilling finale last year, with Ryan Fox pushing Fleetwood to the limit, but the latter eventually holding off to secure the title. And the six-time DP World Tour title-holder has carried the confidence to Sun City, on the heels of a good year.

I’ve played really well. You should always look at the positives and I think this year has been arguably my most consistent year,” the 32-year-old told the DP World Tour website.

The Gary Player Golf Course offers tricky challenges, but Fleetwood has experience and good memories to fall back on. “You never really feel really comfortable on this course. But I guess when you’ve played well, you’re going to feel as comfortable as possible and having the experience coming down the stretch and winning is very, very important and nice to have,” he said.

Fleetwood hasn’t won anything yet this year, but has remained consistent. He was also part of Team Europe that won the Ryder Cup in Rome earlier this year. Before that, he captained Great Britain and Ireland at the inaugural Hero Cup.

But is he coming to the tournament a little undercooked? Fleetwood took a month-long break after the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in October 2023. The golfer, though, feels that his game is in good shape. And he is looking forward to achieving the hat-trick.

‘The Million  Dollar Challenge’

For my generation I guess, and for people older and younger too, but I remember it as the Million Dollar Challenge and everything,” said Fleetwood on the DP World Tour Instagram page. He added, “So it’s always had such a high value, I guess. And yet to be going for a third win seems pretty surreal, but we’ll see what we can do.”

To achieve his goal, Fleetwood will have to stave off challenges from the other title contenders – Adrian Meronk, Ryan Fox, Victor Perez and Sami Valimaki. Do you think he will be able to do it?

My career highlight, however, was writing for the Wisden Almanack. Now focusing on my love for golf and living by my maxim of "staying young by heart forever," I intend to reach out to every golf fan through ES, in this time of social media boom, and further my stance as a journalist.
