Days Before the PGA Tour’s Announcement, Rory McIlroy Voices His Staunch Opinion: ‘I’m Pro It’

Following a mediocre year, Rory McIlroy is now making a strong comeback at the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Ohio. Although he has had an ordinary season so far, the golfer missed two PGA Tour designated events that resulted in subsequent penalties. He is also facing some undisclosed personal challenges but despite that the Irish golfer has remained steadfast in expressing his views. His unhesitating belief in his abilities and the sport has remained utterly intact. 

Yet again, McIlroy has boldly expressed his firm stance on the highly anticipated announcement by the PGA Tour that everyone in the golf fraternity is eyeing these days.

Just when the 2023 season is halfway through its course, the golf world was blessed with the delightful news about the 2024 schedule and what to expect from it. On Wednesday, prior to the Memorial Tournament, PGA Tour executives held a meeting with the media to share updates about the upcoming season’s schedule.

During his post-round press conference on day 2 of the $20 million event in Ohio, the Northern Irishman was asked about his thoughts on the changes in the anticipated schedule such as playing a tournament a week before the major. To which he replied,I’m pro it. I really like playing the week before a major.”

Explaining why he is on the good side of this, the world no. 3 said that he believes the only way to perform sharply in the golf tournament is to prepare yourself by playing another golf tournament. Sharing his personal experience, the golfer said that he has done it both ways. “I’ve won majors not doing it and won majors doing it.”

Sharing about how Akron prepared him for the major, the golfer said, “I felt like Akron was a great tournament, but it also got you prepared for what you were going to face the next week. So I love those sorts of stretches.”

Update on the PGA Tour 2024 schedule

Andy Pazder and Tyler Dennis from the PGA Tour informed everyone that the task of putting together the upcoming schedule was almost done. The 2024 Tour schedule is being promoted as a schedule that will introduce a novel arrangement of designated events, along with groupings of “swing events” that will be scheduled in between them. It is expected that the announcement of the schedule will be made by the end of this month.

As mentioned on Golf Week, Pazder informed that the purses for the designated events are expected to remain at $20 million next year. Additionally, Dennis mentioned that a new event will be added in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, resulting in a total of five opposite-field events. Pazder also confirmed that the Tour is fully sponsored for the upcoming year.
