It has been officially confirmed that the animosity and bitterness between the leagues is over. Now, the partnership has been sweetened with a common investor backing the game on international fronts. PGA Tour informed that the new league is yet to be named. However, the agreement has been undertaken by the traditional league along with the DP World Tour. As per the reports, the aim of the merger is ‘to unify the game of golf, on a global basis.’

Based on all the information that was made public just hours ago, PGA Tour loyalists naturally projected their strong emotions to the same. According to Dan Rapaport, the professionals on the Tour were not informed about the startling union. He tweeted, “PGA Tour didn’t communicate this to players at all. They found out same time we did.

To further strengthen his statements he quoted the powerful expressions from the PGA Tour golfers. The reactions comprised shock and confusion. Another similar take on the same was, “Disgusted. They didn’t tell us anything.

The reaction is quite understandable from their outlook. The golfers were ready with strong remarks given the way the message was communicated and announced. Not only this, these were the individuals who had stood with the league when a strong rival in the form of LIV Golf had emerged. The financial lure from the latter did not change their loyalties and they chose the PGA Tour. However, now, PGA Tour commissioner, Jay Monahan, addressed these PGA Tour flag-wavers with a two-page memorandum!

The framework behind the unexpected alliance

A new entity will be formed that will combine the commercial businesses and rights of the PGA Tour, LIV Golf, and the DP World Tour.  Not so surprisingly, Jay Monahan will retain his commissioner title as the PGA Tour Inc, will carry on as a 501(c)(6) tax-exempt organization. Additionally, it perpetuates the administrative rights of the PGA Tour.

While Ed Herlihy also will not be impacted by this merger as the PGA Tour Policy Board Chairman, he will be joined by Yasir Al-Rumayyan. Al-Rumayyan is the governor of the Public Investment Fund (PIF). Amidst all this, Monahan proclaimed some strong points. These mostly entailed opposing statements to the previous stances of the organization-

  • The strict regulations that were devised earlier against the LIV golfers who had moved the leagues remain suspended. All the litigations between the entities completely dissolved with the merger. This also includes the earlier victory of the DP World Tour over the LIV players. The legal win imposed on the players who had paired with LIV Golf a fine of $126,00.
  • Even though the LIV Golf 2023 season would continue, there will be an in-depth evaluation of it. This is to determine the best possible integration of team events into the individual stroke plays.
  • Also, the stunning coalition provides a ‘fair and objective‘ for all those players who wish to re-apply for the PGA Tour and DP World Tour membership. This opportunity would be given after the conclusion of the 2023 season under established regulations

The PGA Tour has taken up the same funding backbone that it had initially spoken against. According to the PGA Tour Commissioner, the pairing marks a ‘momentous day‘. He concluded with a strong sentiment that was definitely not there before. The end of the battle between the leagues ushered in a new phase of golf.

Additionally, Monahan added, “This transformational partnership recognizes the immeasurable strength of the PGA Tour’s history, legacy, and pro-competitive model and combines with it the DP World Tour and LIV.” This last-minute golden information has created total mayhem in the golf world.
