On Sunday, the Dublin amateur Richard Knightly won the Laytown and Bettystown Senior Scratch Cup. As good as his day seemed to be at the end, it had got off to a worst start. Knightly surely arrived at the Laytown and Bettystown Golf Club fully focused on the trophy, but his plans were hindered.

The Royal Dublin Golf Club player’s focus was surely taken away when he locked his car keys inside the car. With no option left, Knightly took the immediate possible action. Knightly took out a 7-iron and smashed his car window to take out his car keys. Even if that spontaneous swing did the job just fine, it was simply a foreshadowing of what was to come.

Many people would have worried about the inconvenience and expense of mending the damage after having to use an iron on their own vehicle, but Knightly had no such concerns. Instead, Knightly went on to do something surprising. On the opening playoff hole, Rafferty surely appeared poised to win. However, Knightly had some other plans and went on to ruin the day for Rafferty. Knightly maintained his composure and made an eight-foot putt to save par. On the second playoff hole, the match went close as players matched each other once more. However, it was Knightly who came on the top. Knightly ultimately gained the upper hand by holing for birdie after Rafferty’s ten-foot birdie putt fell just short.

After the win Knightly did some surprising thingd. After accepting the prize, Knightly went on to pose for a picture in front of the now-less-than-immaculate vehicle, and then began the undoubtedly satisfying, if slightly breezy, drive home. Thus, there was a complete turnaround in fortunes for the player, whose preparation for the day’s play could hardly have got off to a worse start.
