With less than a month left for the American Express Tournament, former world number one, Jon Rahm, had announced his commitment to play in the 2023 event. Though he has participated in several events in the past, this outcome comes as a surprise to many. Find out why Rahm’s participation in the Three Course event is unsettling for many golf fans.

Last month, Rahm concluded his European season with a win in Dubai, after claiming the DP World Tour Championship. The Spaniard hopes to continue his top form onto his first PGA Tour event of 2023.

Jon Rahm is participating in the 2023 American Express despite the history

Rahm’s may be seeking a win at the American Express tournament, which is set to take place from January 16-22. However, his last season’s event wasn’t up to the mark and left him frustrated with the course’s conditions. Though the courses; PGA West Stadium Course, Nicklaus Tournament Course, and La Quinta are deemed to be legendary, The Spaniard wasn’t happy with their conditions in January of this year.

While walking on the greens, the 28-year-old was heard saying, “Piece of s***, f****** setup, putting contest week, Jesus Christ”. The recorded video went viral immediately, drawing gossip of Rahm never returning to the American Express event.

Nonetheless, within a year, the Spaniard had a change of plan and hopes to win back the tournament which he won in 2018. Though he released his frustration during the 2022 edition of the tournament and ended in the 14th position, the former world number one would be hoping to kick off his 2023 with a win in La Quinta.

Who else will compete alongside Rahm?

Apart from Jon Rahm’s commitment to the event, many other talented PGA Tour players are also set to take the field on January 16th,2023. Patrick Cantlay will be competing at the American Express Tournament next to his good friend, Xander Schaufelle.

Current world number two Scottie Scheffler will hope to start his 2023 year with the spirits of the previous season. Tony Finau, who had three wins in 2022, will also be looking for a win at La Quinta in a month. Additionally, the 2019 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, Sungjae Im, will also be competing.
