Tiger Woods has possibly seen the most success of any golfer on the course. Having made nearly $121 million on the course alone, he has undoubtedly scaled great heights. But behind his flourishing triumphs there also looms failure. Well, not failure in the literal sense, of course, but in terms of Woods’ standards. One such disappointment for him comes with his history at the Players Championship, which begins this week. Here the golf legend has failed to create a legacy for himself like at other PGA Tour events.

History between The Players and Tiger Woods

When it comes to the TPC Sawgrass event, the 15-time major winner hasn’t seen a lot of wins. In fact, it remains one of the few events on the Tour that Woods has only been able to win twice since turning pro in 1996.

Although both of his wins there were magnificent, it still remains the course he dreaded the most because of how ill-fated his time there has been. In the year 2000, which was the 82-time PGA Tour winner’s most successful year of his career, he won nine times on the Tour. It’s safe to say he was in stupendous form back then.

And despite his form and having won three majors that year, The Players still seemed to elude him. The golf pro lost by just one stroke to Hal Sutton. But that wasn’t the end of it. In 2013, Woods won the event, but the following year he fell prey to a severe back injury, forcing him to give up on defending his title.

This year too, even though he seemed to be on a good course of recovery from his injuries, he was not able to commit to this week’s Players Championship. And all thanks to his recovery suddenly taking a turn for the worse. It certainly does look like there’s a curse for woods at the TPC Sawgrass course!

In 2001, after having lost by one measly stroke, Sutton Woods came back stronger. He went toe-to-toe with Vijay Singh only to come out on top, beating the Fijian star by a stroke. Unfortunately for him, the following year he sipped up and ended the event tied for 14th place.

The golf champion’s second and last Players Championship win came in 2013. He won by two strokes, beating out three golfers, David Lingmerth, Jeff Maggert, and Kevin Streelman, for the win. The next year, he didn’t take the course at the event, and since then, he hasn’t come close to grabbing that top spot at the TPC Sawgrass course.
