Watson and Nicklaus also had a fierce rivalry during the 1970s and 1980s. Mental Toughness, precision, and determination defined Watson. The two golfers faced off against each other in numerous high-profile tournaments, including major championships.
Nicklaus did not shy away from acknowledging that the two greats have given him a tough time on the field. But it’s also true that he has also defeated them a few times as well. In a 2020 interview with Fore Play Golf, Nicklaus said, “Watson and Trevino were probably the two guys that gave me the most trouble down the stretch. They were both terrific competitors.” He added, “Trevino and I came down the stretch several times and Watson and I came down the stretch and frankly they got me probably more than I got them.”
