With the WGC Match Play coming to an end, fans have been disappointed with the PGA Tour. As per reports, the PGA Tour is not looking to continue hosting Match Play events despite them holding a really special place in the fans’ hearts. What does Rory McIlroy think about the end of the WGC Match Play?

Match Play tournaments have been part of the PGA Tour’s schedule since 1999. And it was the same year when the World Golf Championships took birth. As per PGA Tour Commissioner, Jay Monahan’s recent announcement, the WGC Match Play tournament is not a good fit for the upcoming year on the Tour. “For next season’s schedule, it didn’t work…But match play has been a staple out here. It’s been a staple of the DP World Tour. That will certainly be a consideration as we go forward,” Monahan said in his statements.

Well, his words definitely acted as a ray of hope for the fans. And it’s true that the PGA Tour’s current announcement only includes the 2024 schedule. This means that there is a possibility for the American League to bring back the tournament in the upcoming years.

Nonetheless, McIlroy continued with his take on the situation and even called out the PGA Tour for their decision in a rather bold manner. He said, “Match play is the purest form of the game and for the biggest tour in the world not to play a match play event would be a real shame.”
