Many people might not have a great relationship with their siblings; however, that was not the case with Dustin Johnson and his brother Austin. Their fraternal relationship shines as an example for everyone with a sibling. The 38-year-old golfer has his younger brother as his caddie and cannot be happier. Since 2013, Austin has been Johnson’s companion on the course, and the duo has been successful.

Even though he was criticized for choosing his brother, Johnson knew what he wanted. He stood firm in his decision. Also, the circumstances were responsible for his decision in 2013. The golfer’s regular caddie Bobby Brown was not present with the golfer and couldn’t make it to Australia for the Perth International tournament. That is when Austin came as a savior and assumed the role of the caddie for his brother. Since then, they have been together on the golf course. Let’s find out what the LIV golfer has to say to his critics.

Why Dustin Johnson wanted his brother to be his caddie?

In an interview with ESPN last year, the former no. 1 Dustin Johnson shared his experience of working with his brother as a caddie. The LIV golfer received much criticism for choosing someone with significantly less golf experience. However, he explained that spending extra time with his brother was his main reason. Johnson explained that his brother had played golf as a junior, and his basic knowledge was good enough to be a caddie. “He didn’t have any experience caddying, but he played golf as a junior and he was a good player,” said the LIV defector.

The Masters champion added, “He had been around the game enough to know the basics, but for me, it was more about I just enjoyed him being on the bag.” According to Johnson. He wanted to spend more time with his younger brother. Golfers spend a lot of time with their caddies during practice sessions and traveling. Therefore, despite heavy criticism, he stood firm in his decision. Also, Austin had fun caddying for his older brother. They have had a great time together and have had many victories, too.

Allen Terrell, the director of coaching at the Dustin Johnson School of Golf, also had his take on the situation. He said that it was normal for Johnson to receive criticism for choosing his brother, as caddies put in much hard work in honing their skills. So it might come as disrespect to all full-time caddies to choose a non-experienced person on the bag. They might envy the position, too, and hence the criticism.

What Austin thinks about being the caddie?

Austin believes he has grown a lot since he joined his brother. He told ESPN they would have succeeded more if they had been together since Johnson’s rookie year. Also, he believes that the sibling duo would have argued on the course. However, that wasn’t the case, as Austin joined his brother later in his career. They both have matured a lot, and Austin’s experience in his role.
