The Saudi International, Asian Tour’s inaugural event of the season, has reached its final stages. However, some of the top players on the roster will no longer play a part in the tournament. The top 65 players moved on from the cut, which forced heavyweights like Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, and Cameron Smith to pack their bags early.

The event at the Royal Greens Golf & Country Club in Saudi Arabia was seen as a stepping stone for LIV golfers ahead of the start of its second season. But some of its most lucrative players have failed to make their mark, which comes as a major disappointment.

Take the case of Cameron Smith. The 29-year-old won the Open Championship last year, which made his LIV switch even bitter for the PGA Tour counterparts. However, his year didn’t start well at the Saudi International. He missed the cut by two strokes, which will put the Aussie under pressure in his next outing.

On the other hand, Bryson DeChambeau talked extensively about getting his mojo back ahead of the new season. But the 2020 U.S. Open champion finished a lowly 7-over par, which has brought back fears of his last season.

DeChambeau was one of the stand-out names who made the switch to the LIV Golf Series last year. He was made captain of one of the franchises but failed to lead his team by example. DeChambeau’s performances were sub-par – he couldn’t make it to the top 10 in any LIV event. The 29-year-old will be hoping for better as the season continues.

All talk but no golf by Phil Mickelson

Even though he wasn’t involved, Mickelson stood out amongst the rest even before the start of the tournament due to his tweets pertaining to the ‘teegate’ controversy. The 6-time major championship winner also claimed to be back in shape, both mentally and physically, heading into the new season.

However, it turned out to be a mixed bag for him. Over two days, Mickelson carded eight birdies, six bogeys, and one triple bogey. He scored 70 and 71 in his two rounds before bowing out.
